I've always found it interesting how the masses hate those who're successful. Isn't that the "American dream?" To become successful and help society? Bill Gates has done both. Yet we hate him and his company. Makes you wonder why anyone would even strive for success these days. It's easy enough to be despised without putting all of that work in.

I don't hate the guy. I just think it is absurd to build a cult around him.

That's just how I feel about Obama!

In Rare Move, Microsoft Is Exploring Job Cuts

JANUARY 15, 2009

Microsoft Corp. is seriously exploring significant work force reductions that could be announced as early as next week, in a sign that the weak economy is prompting tough decisions even at one of the steadiest ships in the technology industry.

According to people familiar with its plans, the Redmond, Wash., giant is considering layoffs across its various divisions, a rare occurrence for the world's largest software company. However, plans for the cutbacks are still in flux and Microsoft could end up finding alternative methods of reining in costs, one of these people said.

Holy cow- the Microsoft unemployed will plague my city <_<

on the bright side, there will be no waiting for your latte.

Gawd. They will be homeless tree-huggers with ponytails outside each Starbucks!!!

they can't afford them, they will be unemployed!

:bonk:

why would they be hanging around a place they can't afford? starbucks will run them off. shoo!

wonder if the homeless tree-huggers will petition the IOC to make "dumpster diving for used coffee grounds" an olympic sport during the next summer games?

Microsoft 'town hall' meeting will cap week of layoff suspense

Microsoft has alerted employees to a "town hall" internal meeting with CEO Steve Ballmer "and other senior leaders" scheduled for Friday morning, following its Thursday afternoon earnings release. For the record, the company says it routinely holds these types of town hall meetings after it reports earnings.

However, given widespread rumors of impending cutbacks -- including possible layoffs -- this one seems to be generating quite a bit of buzz among employees, and feeding the rumor mill. If the company were to announce cutbacks toward the end of this week, the Friday session would provide an obvious forum for discussing and explaining the plan.

The internal notice says Ballmer and other executives will "share their thoughts on Q2 earnings results and the year ahead."

Still no comment from the company on the possibility of layoffs.

Back in late 04, we had a 'townhall' to go over the announcement that our jobs were being outsourced. There was serious muscle in that conference room that day. Like they were actually afraid of their IT geeks.

afterward, their gps took them to canada, their bank accounts were mysteriously empty, and their names suddenly appeared on the no fly list.

Union: IBM layoff count nearing 3,000 this week

January 23, 2009 (Computerworld) Microsoft Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. aren't the only top IT vendors laying off employees this week. IBM may have quietly let more than 2,800 workers go, according to the Alliance@IBM union, which expects even more job cuts at the company.

Lee Conrad, a former IBM employee who now is national coordinator of Endicott, N.Y.-based Alliance@IBM, said the layoffs currently appear to be happening primarily in two IBM units: its software group, and its sales and distribution operations. But Conrad said he expects the cuts to spread to other units in the coming weeks.

MS actually has enough employees to even lay off 15,000? Here, I was under the impression that Bill was writing all those programs.

Would be nice if they hired one guy that could write a program that works the first time. But that would lay off millions of people that depend on fixing MS #######.

Oh yeah. I worked for a chiropractor whose business was supported 80% by Microsoft workers. They have huges campuses, with shuttle busses between them. It's insane.
