On Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations", he was in India (awhile ago) and he went down a certain food street in Mumbai and so many things looked so good to me, and that stuff is all really inexpensive! I know it might be risky eating some of it b/c of water issues for me, but if it's safe I think street food looks the best sometimes, and it's the cheapest too. I can't wait to go to India and eat Indian food every day that we didn't have to cook ourselves! (probably going next month  ). *salivates*

risk is part of the yummyness.. best street food is not clean.. the pennies add flavor to the food the people from teh carts handle

 I'd be willing to risk it if there are bathrooms close by everywhere I go...:P

Not to go off topic, but I don't think I'll realistically be doing that even though it's so tempting...more because of safety issues. We are going to stay in one area mostly, and it's outside of the main city of Mumbai. But I am sure there will be good food near where we will be, and my mother in law will cook yummy stuff!

Once you've had a good dose of listeria, salmonella or e-coli, you won't want to go back there again ;)

This thread has made me smile to read about everyone's differing views of food and what is expensive.

Personally, I love eating at fancy shmancy restaurants as well as hole in the wall places. Some of the best Mexican I ever had was at La Mina in Lamont CA (tiny joint in a tiny town). There are times I even get in the mood for Chili's or Outback, mostly when I feel the need to eat junk food and pump my system full of grease and salt :P (not that often actually).

This is one of my favorite fancier restaurants.

My father trades morel mushrooms for meals there, and I try to go every time I am in CT. With my husband being out of work currently, we cannot afford to eat out much, so we only eat out if I can use my dad's meals there or we go to our friends' Thai restaurant where my husband bartered carpentry for free food.

When my husband was working, we would have considered $30 for a meal a good deal. Now that he is out of work, that is hella expensive. Just depends on your circumstance.

fried stuff should be OK like samosas, pakoras etc. but make sure it is fresh and hasn't been sitting around. Whatever you do don't get pani puri from a street vendor, no matter how tempting it is. I would also avoid cut fruit and veggies - buy mangoes, cut and wash them yourself in purified water. People say don't drink lassi but I've never had problems from it, just make sure they don't put water or ice in it.

yeah if you see it come right out of the vat of oil with your own eyes its cool.

I love onion Bhajees, but they're probably as bad for you as that Awesome Blossom.

Yeah. It's ok to have 1 from time to time, if you can stop at 1 that is.

Solution is to take 1 onion bhajee followed by 1 Guntur-chili (aka "needle pepper") bhajee--that'll guarantee stopping!

I suppose it depends where you go when eating out. I can imagine some places you can get a meal for two at or around $30, but you'd need to be exceptionally frugal to do so. In any event, I'd recommend going out to dinner less often and when you do go out, you can splurge a little. Why bother eating out at someplace that serves only so-so food? That seems like a waste of money to me. Cook dinner at home most of the time and when you do go out, you'll have some money stored up to go somewhere really nice.

The thing I'm most amazed at, however, is the concept you can "buy a lot of groceries" for $30 or so. I don't know what you're getting, but while my wife and I aren't rich, the grocery bill usually comes out to least twice that. Usually more. Of course, we purchase more at one time so we don't have to go grocery shopping every week (if we can avoid it).
