Thanks for the help! We had a K-3 visa and you cant get a SSN without your EAD so it makes sense now. I know the EAD don't take long but with tax season coming closer my husband is starting to worry that we won't get it in time and we'll not get the full amount like last year.

With tax purposes, you can get Tax Identification Number in lieu of SSN. Just follow the link below to learn more. Hope this helps.

What is an ITIN used for?

ITINs are for federal tax reporting only, and are not intended to serve any other purpose. An ITIN does not authorize work in the U.S. or provide eligibility for Social Security benefits or the Earned Income Tax Credit. ITINs are not valid identification outside the tax system.

IRS issues ITINs to help individuals comply with the U.S. tax laws, and to provide a means to efficiently process and account for tax returns and payments for those not eligible for Social Security Numbers.

Who needs an ITIN?

IRS issues ITINs to foreign nationals and others who have federal tax reporting or filing requirements and do not qualify for SSNs. A non-resident alien individual not eligible for a SSN, who is required to file a U.S. tax return only to claim a refund of tax under the provisions of a U.S. tax treaty, needs an ITIN.

Examples of individuals who need ITINs include:

Non-resident alien filing a U.S. tax return and not eligible for a SSNU.S. resident alien (based on days present in the United States) filing a U.S. tax return and not eligible for a SSNDependent or spouse of a U.S. citizen/resident alienDependent or spouse of a non-resident alien visa holder

Congrats on the NOA1, hope we would get it soon also so I could stop worrying whether they received our papers or it got lost. (simba ko palayo)

Thanks Gay! Hope you will be getting your NOAs soon too. Just dont worry, we have sent ours earlier than yours anyway, so it's just a matter of time

that you will see your NOA in your mailbox, soon! ;)

Congratulations!! Hopefully your biometrics letter will arrive soon too! =)

Thanks so much! Yes hopefully, the next is our biometrics!

Received our NOA1's today (1/20) and have biometrics scheduled for 2/6/09 in OKC. They sent appointment letters for both my wife and her 6 year-old daughter. I thought young children were exempt from biometrics.

Congratulations!! Hopefully things move quickly for all of us =) Did your biometrics tell you to go to a certain location or just go to the nearest local office. The reason I ask is cause we have an office one hour away and one two hours away. However, the one in Spokane (two hours away) is processing things a lot quicker than the other one and I didn't know if we had a choice.

Yes, the biometrics notice has the address where you are to go, in addition to the date and time and additional info about what to bring and how to reschedule if necessary.

Still sitting on pins and needles waiting for NOA.

Packet was delivered to Chicago address and signed for on Jan. 14.

Saved a ton of money by doing it ourselves . . . but will have no peace of mind that it didn't fall into a black hole until I see the NOA and an actual case number.

I'm sure they received your applications, or else they would have sent the return receipt way long ago.Plus even w/o the personnel's signature, you got the tracking affirmation that your packet has been received, so no worries ;) Enjoy the winter  take care (F)

Hayy, lagi unta nadawat nila.. I am stressing coz I enrolled in continuing education here and I won't recieve certificate, much less be allowed to take the certification exam untill I have my SSN and I can't get SSN till after I receive EAD (immigration officer at POE messed up my admission status so I was not able to get SSN prior to I-94 expiration)... and I also want to enroll in a 2 year program here but I wont qualify for the in-state tuition until I get approved for permanent resident status... i just hope we would get some news soon kay nastress out na jud ang beauty nako dhay.
