Ok, the lawyer we were looking at to process the K1 for next year, is a pita. So were going to look for another... my boyfriend really just wants the peace of mine of having it done with a lawyer, fine by me.

Does anyone have any recomendations that they used? And how much they charged in total?

When researching doing our K-1 a few years ago, I could not justify the $2000 - $3000 that a lawyer would charge to simply fill in forms and send them to USCIS.

I ended up filing the I-129F my self.

Unless you have complex issues that are considered to be "Red Flags" a lawyer in just an extra expense.

You will find that the community on VJ are for the most part "DIY" types, and many have had a lawyer screw their petitions up.

The guides here give detailed instructions that are easily followed to DIY.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

We didn't go with a lawyer. Doing it on our own and making out fine. This website is a great help. I don't think I seen a posting on here from someone who had good luck with one! They certainly can't make the process go any faster for you. You still wait just as long whether you do the paperwork or they do. They don't get special treatment. As long as you do your homework, follow the guides........If we were doing it over again I would still do it on our own. Good luck!

(I'm going for the IR-1 and blowing off the K-3. Even if it takes an extra couple months, it's worth it to not have to deal with USCIS again)

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Note:

Please fill out I-130, wait 6 months for approval, then 3 more months for an interview. (Unless of course we've bombed your country into the stone age, then you qualify for expedited processing.)

Welcome to the USA!!!

I agree. Don't get a lawyer unlesss you have a complication in your case or your going thru an extremely difficult consulate, and then only go with a lawyer who has extensive experience with your issues and consulate.

It's a matter of preference, if they want peace of mind and want a lawyer then it's their choice.

My fiancé also insisted on getting a lawyer just for the peace of mind, but there was no way I could justify $3000 which will be better spent elsewhere.

If you just follow the guides here you will have no problem at all, unless of course there might be 'complicated issues' as others have also said.

We've now filed our I129F on our own, of course with the guidance of those on VJ that have first hand experience in answering those nitty gritty questions, and loads of double checking of all documents.

Once it's done you will look back and chuckle, and realise how easy it actually was and all the stress was for nothing after all.

Best of luck in which ever route you choose to go.

We hired a lawyer, it gave peace of mind to my Fiance but to be honest it has added time to our process.

If we had found VJ first I think he would have been far happier about us completing the paperwork ourselves.

Your fiance needs to create an account on VJ, or come here and look at the resources and information available! I've heard this before, when the fiance that isn't here on VJ says that they should have a lawyer, because the person that is on here is getting all the information and they aren't sure that it's correct.

See what he thinks after being here...he might have a change of heart. It's a lot of money for a lawyer, for sending in papers that you have to fill in anyway.

I am planning on using the Law Office of Michael O'Toole, they are listed in the "links" under "Immigration Law Offices" If you look at the website it states that they charge $450 flat rate, also if the Visa is denied, there is a Money back guarantee

We are confident in our ability to help you obtain your visa. If your K1 visa petition is not approved by the USCIS we will refund our legal fee or appeal your case for free if we determine that there is merit to appeal the K1 fiancee visa.

The OP stated the boyfriend WANTS to use a lawyer. If that's their preference there's really nothing wrong with that.

the only regret that we had on our I-129F application was hiring a lawyer..if you can do it yourself then please do..lawyers are just a waste of money..we paid $2000 and i ended up doing most of the paperworks..at my aos she asked us for an additional $2500 and there was no way in hell we will pay her that..so with help of visa journey i did it myself...

My husband was thinking of hiring an attorney to do our paper works but I insisted to do it our own. I've been the one doing the research stuff...reading here and there...and visajourney is our no. 1 guide throughout the process. Well I was glad that both our petitions were approved and no RFE.

I had a friend who hired a lawyer for their visa and everytime she got an appointment with their lawyer she has to pay P500 or $10+ just for a few question. Basically, what the agent did was just to gather all the papers, prepared the forms and arranged them. Still, it was my friend who did most of the hardwork in getting all the supporting documents needed. I have nothing against the lawyers but economically speaking, I think doing it your own is the best choice. You will be proud of yourself once you successfully finish the process.

If you do it your own, it is always free to post your questions here in VJ and most of the people here are willing to help and share their opinion & advice. Goodluck to your visa journey!!! :star:
