Man ain't that the truth~!

It seems like, more and more; things that used to be bad are now honorable and things that used to be good are looked down on.

I grew up with a few large families around me and I always admired them.

I don't have a problem with them having as many kids as they want; I have a small problem with acting as if they are the only true Christians (and some coverage certainly paints them that way) because they're really fertile. 18 children would have been rare generations ago; it's a lot of kids! And they're not on welfare largely because they are on reality TV as microcelebrities, isn't it? Seems like a weird childhood but the kids seem to be turning out okay.

Other than that, I just feel bad for the kid named Jinger, a stretch for the J theme.

It's not that people are more enlightened today and less judgmental than in past generations, it's that they are judgmental about different things.

Haha, my husband didn't really care about them until he saw the episode of their show where they handed out photos of themselves. He was just creaped out by it, now he can't stand them. It's very amusing. I understand their beliefs, but I think it would be a better use of their resources and human good will to adopt 1/2 of them. And if God can get a virgin pregnant, I doubt that a condom or a pill will get in his way if he really wants her preggers.

Well, you mean 18 kids that would survive as long as they have. My uterus got up and ran away when I was reading about a German poet named Paul Zech born in 1881. He was the thirdborn and first of 22 children to survive of a single marriage. Also, some of the Duggars' children were born by c-section. It is not known if she or her children would have survived so many births without the benefit of modern medicine.

That's exactly what I was going to say, Cherry. I wouldn't go as far as 100 years ago, though.

100 years ago or more having a large family was preferable. More people required extra hands in an agricultural environment or needed supplemental income, all of which would benefit from more children. Even more importantly, the death rate for children (and people in general) was higher, so more kids were born to ensure living offspring.

In defense of the Duggars, at least they aren't on welfare and seem to believe in what they're doing. I don't agree with their choices, but there are far more people with less or no children in worse situations.

My guess is that even though Mr. Duggar can manage to feed and clothe his family with the income from his real estate investments, that he took a look around one day and decided it was going to be impossible to send them all to college.

So he and his wife decided to prostitute their family in the media for financial gain.

Once they went too far, there was no turning back, so go for the celebrity factor.
