Last weekend, I was going home through the main shopping areas of downtown here in the city. The sidewalks were PACKED and I saw plenty of shopping bags in people's hands.....and they weren't bags from Walmart, Target or any of their competitors. I was kind of surprised, considering the economy and the official start to the Christmas season hasn't yet begun.

Same thing here last weekend. It was like everyone decided to go shopping on Saturday!

Also, saw gas for $1.51 last night :o

AJ if you need a gun for home security, hubby has extras for you and the wife.

It takes months to get a permit for a firearm around here. And I hear you may not get it at all if you're not willing to drop by the police station every few weeks to push things along.

This was the scene at our local Costco's cash registers last Sunday...

Holy F*! No recession in the Jerz.

I'll take a pic of Costco Hawaiian Style next time we're there. Nothing going on like that. Except at the gas station. Gas there is 50 cents a gallon cheaper than any other place in Kona.

Hubby used to live in Jersey and hated it only because of its gun laws. He complained about having to get a permit for a BB gun. He gauges every state according to its gun laws. Oh how he hates Hawaii. . . . .

With the stock market plunging daily, unemployment rising and a general malaise on the population I was wondering what you have notice in your area that is a result of this economic crisis.

I'm in Northern California and we of course have seen a huge slump in home building and home sales with the related industries also suffering. The downturn is really impacting the retail stores with sales of merchandise at unseen lows. This summer our tourist industry suffered due to the huge forest fires. But, with an early snow in the mountain at the first of November, some ski resorts have already opened.

Mostly what I see is people holding onto their money and not sure whether to buy things for fear they won't have money later. At least gas prices have come down. Someone told me they bought regular gas for less that $2 a gallon.

I know that times are getting tough when the number of spam email is down and not hardly any virus attacks are being sent.

What's is like in your part of the country? Any good news is appreciated.

1HappyGuy. I just wrote a comment in another thread saying that I was pretty old, too old as a matter of fact.

A few days ago I wrote a story in another website about my experiences during the Great Depression. As a child

I lived to see pain and suffering that this country hopefully will never see again. You talk about people holding onto

their money and not sure whether to buy for fear they won`t have money later...That is a good point..In my childhood

experience -- there was no money, period. No food, no jobs and sometimes no parents, for there was only chaos.

The situation here is surely heading into my own nightmare...We are going there, mark my word.

I would love to bring my story for you to read. But Nighthawk is a persona non-grata here.

:) There can be no gray areas.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Nighthawk,

I'm sure that there will be a lot of old lessons to be learned by the younger people in this country, if not worldwide. We have become a society of excess and tightening the belt is not on many people's agenda. Luckily for most of us on VJ, we have fiancee's or spouses that come from countries that are used to doing with less. We will probably survive better than most but the tough times are coming. This is something that everyone needs to learn.

I was hoping that we would hear about some good things happening throughout the country, but it seems most of the bad stuff is the prevalent theme.

And hey guys, we didn't need this to become about guns & gun control. But, I understand. Some people get caught in a train of thought/speech and can't get out.

Surely sir this isn't your first time in OT. :bonk: You're lucky if you get 2 posts on topic.

If you wanted to hear about positive things then why start a thread titled recession or depression. Start a thread title with sunshine, rainbows and unicorns.
