Did anyone fly to their SO's country and come back together on same flight?

As soon as my husband has visa in hand my plan is to buy a ticket for me to fly over there around Memorial Day and his ticket to come here with me around July 4th - I am wondering who has done this and if it was any more expensive than buying two tickets with the same originating flight - hope this makes sense. Also, did you find any difficulty buying your SO's ticket in the US? I will be buying from a travel agent since I have always found cheaper tickets to Nepal that way rather than online.

This is what we did. I bought a round trip ticket for myself, and a one way ticket for my now wife with the flight matching my return flight.

Even though it might be cheaper, due to the fare rules, you cannot buy two RT tickets originating in the US. If you don't use the outbound leg of a RT ticket, the return leg will be canceled. You could by 1 RT ticket originating in the US and 1 RT ticket originating in Nepal and not use the return leg on the second ticket.

We check on expedia.com for the best rates and flights, can drive you nuts, not only do we have a choice of three international airports, but even changing the departure and arrival dates by a day or two, can save you hundreds of dollars. What we have been doing is then contacting the airline we chose and dealing directly with them. Except for the last time, elected to go with Air Canada, as kind of lost faith in the ####### our most trusted FAA has been doing. There rates for the same exact flight was like 800 bucks more. So we ordered through expedia, had to wait 24 hours as they contacted Air Canada to verify both the flight and the rates, they did. We will be on four different airplanes, and for each they allowed us to select our seats, on all four flights we should be seated together.

In the past when we couldn't do that, would ask the flight attendant what can be done, always found an accomdating passenger willing to switch, since your flight is next July, should have plenty of time to search on the internet for the best rates. Good luck. They do have these lower cost greater than 24 flights, but will only save you a couple of bucks and much more than that for expensive airport food and hotel accomodations. And you may fly to Russia to get to South America from the USA, crazy.

Wonder what kind of random number generator they use to list airfare rates.

We did the same thing. Although it might be cheaper to buy the one way ticket over there.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I was wondering does anyone know what happens at the POE? I am planning on flying to Brazil for my spouse's interview and then flying to the US together. I know that there is a line for US residents and another line for visitors. Does this mean that my spouse and I have to wait in separate lines? I also heard that there is an interview for the beneficiary at the POE...is this true?

Ha, from what I have seen cheaper to buy a round trip than a one way ticket, wonder how they figure that?

We took our chances and bought tickets before his visa was approved, but we had a very solid case. I went on Travelocity and booked my two-way ticket and his one-way making sure the seats were together and with a window. As soon as we picked up his visa, we flew back together to the US.

Why aren't airline tickets going down after gas has dropped dramatically in the last few weeks? Augh! -_-

We came back together on July 2nd around the same time you're planning. :) I bought the tickets here before I went and used vayama.com which is considered an online travel agent. I had to buy them separately. So I bought one RT for me and then bought a one way for him and asked that we be seated together. It was considered two different transactions, if you understand what I mean. We travelled together and I loved it. Only thing that I didn't fully understand. WHen we came into JFK, I went with him and waited in the non citizen line through customs/immigration. Some people were allowed to go through the citizen line if they were travelling with a citizen. I don't know what the rules are and maybe it just depends on the day of the week or how crowded customs/immigration is at the time, but obviously the citizen line moves MUCH faster!

We did the same thing. Although it might be cheaper to buy the one way ticket over there.

For us, it was cheaper to buy a one way ticket than a round trip.

Namaste Bhaini,

We did this. I bought a RT for me here and made reservations for S&A on my return flight (through a travel agent here), but we actually bought their tickets in KTM through a different travel agent there. Cheaper, and I'm pretty sure we bought one way tickets for them. It took a little finagling (sp?), but it worked out fine and it was fun (and comforting for all of us, I think) to be together through the whole experience.

So exciting that the time is drawing near for you and Govinda!

And I've been following some of your posts about your eyes. We will be praying for you.

hugs,

Maya-didi

PS For the poster who asked about POE, we went through JFK as well, and I just went through the non-USC line. They let us stay together. And the place was practically deserted when we were there.

Pattu,

I've got no advice for your questions, I just wanted to say I'm happy for you and your Govi to finally be able to see an end to the waiting.

Best of everything in these final months apart.

Take care...
