What if the US opened its borders to unlimited immigration?

By Frosty Wooldridge

What if the U.S. opened its borders to unlimited immigration? What if Colorado added another five to ten million or even 20 million people?

Let’s face it, California, at one point, housed a mere five million like Colorado. Today, that state features 37.5 million on its way to 60 million. At one point, citizens did not suffer gridlocked traffic, water shortages or air pollution. In the early years, neither did Colorado. The same goes for all cities of the United States.

But, at some point, population growth raced out of control across this great land. At this moment, 150 million Americans feel the pinch, the unease of their predicament and the symptoms of their dilemma. You’ll feel it more when gas hits $9.00 a gallon as in Europe.

Since we invite 1.2 million immigrants annually and another 1.1 million illegal migrants into this country annually—what’s the big deal about allowing five or 10 million annually?

If you study international demographics, you know that 82 million people add themselves, net gain to the planet, every year. (Source: www.populationmedia.org and www.worldpopulationbalance.org and www.balance.org )

To put things into perspective, one-third of them cannot find a clean glass of drinking water daily. Out of that 82 million, 18 million starve to death or die of starvation related diseases annually. (Source: World Health Organization) At least two billion humans live on less than $3.00 a day for food.

Thus, if we opened our borders to save humanity from its horrible fate, an immediate 18 million starving souls could find food and shelter in the USA annually. However, after a mere five years, that equals 90 million added to our country. In 10 years, that equals 180 million people and in 20 years…well, you get the picture. If you think Colorado suffers water shortages, air pollution and gridlock today, you ain’t seen nothing yet!

William N. Ryerson, director of www.populationmedia.org, said, “I have read with interest the various perspectives presented in the debate on U.S. immigration policy. I pose the following question to anyone who thinks “border control” efforts will not accomplish anything: If the U.S. had no border control (or policing at airports, etc.) what would happen to the number of good people entering this country from the far corners of the world?

“There is no doubt that if there were absolutely no barriers or restrictions at our borders, this great nation would be flooded — overwhelmed — inundated — by MILLIONS of well-meaning, hard-working, honest “tired and poor” people within a matter of months.

“It’s hard to know the number who would move to the U.S. if our borders were opened, but surveys in many countries show significant numbers who would like to live in the U.S. If the borders were opened, perhaps 3 billion people would find their way here in a short period of time - ten times the current population of the U.S. The infrastructure would collapse, our water supply (and food supply) would be exhausted, people would be sleeping in the streets, energy would be at a premium, in short, chaos would be the new norm.

“At current rates of growth, in just 15 years the U.S. population will grow by the equivalent of a new Los Angeles, plus New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, San Francisco, Indianapolis, San Jose, Memphis, Washington, Jacksonville, Milwaukee, Boston, Columbus, New Orleans, Cleveland, Denver, Seattle, and El Paso. All of these to be added in just 15 years! We have heard a lot about the cost of rebuilding New Orleans. The cost of developing all the new infrastructure that will be required in the next 15 years will be huge - and perhaps not achievable. If we opened our borders, the reality would be much worse.”

Therefore, if you enjoyed the power of the U.S. presidency or controlled the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, what would you do? Open our borders to unlimited immigration—knowing your children could not survive in the long term? Or, would you be smarter, more logical and take actions in order to build a sustainable, long term U.S. sustainable civilization?

Within 30 years, we expect 100 million added to this country at our current level of legal and illegal immigration. Do you want that result for your children? What will they tell you in 30 years if that 100 million comes to pass?

I can tell you this: if we allow our country to remain an open border– your life, your children and this society don’t stand a chance in the 21st century. Everything will degrade to enormous and irreversible population travesties. What do you think about that for future generations? How do you think Colorado might do with an added 20 million people?

“Hey buddy, can you find me a glass of water while I’m stuck in traffic while I breathe this toxic air on my way to the ski resort where I get to ski with 20 million others?”

This is such a fallacy.

Let's just suppose that we did announce, today, anyone who wants to move to America is free to do so, and millions of people per month took us up on the offer.

1). Where would they live? We don't have millions of vacant housing units available.

2). Where would they work? We don't have millions of jobs over and above the current population unemployment rate available.

3). Where would they go to school? Most schools are already at or above capacity.

4). What would they eat? Food distribution systems are unlikely to easily accommodate suddenly increased consumption rates.

5). What about medical care? Is everyone else suppose to pay for it? Even if the newly arrived could pay their own way, where would they go? Many places are already running at capacity.

6). Where would we jail them? Surely many of these people with no place to live and no job are going to enter the criminal justice system. Our jails are already overcrowded. Where would all the newly jailed ones go?

And what about the economies of their home countries? The people with the means to move (those that can afford to buy plane tickets and relocate) are likely to be a home country's best and brightest. Who gets left behind? The people who are least capable of improving the state of things in the home country. Without the best and brightest to run things, not ONLY are things at home not going to get any better, they're actually going to get worse!!!

Bringing everyone to America is not the answer to the world's problems.

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

I am sure the rest of the world agrees, despite what the alarmists would have you think. Some people actually like their home countries, some even think their home countries are 'better' (shock horror, how can this be?) than America!

However, believing that everyone else 'envies' the USA is one of those truisms that are used to create that useful emotion OUTRAGE.

Ok, politics 101 is over, move along, nothing to see...

Not in ####### countries. Not many people in the third world would say 'no' if offered a green card.

Millions of illegal immigrants can't be wrong. (:

The most ridiculous example of this "America is the answer" type of thinking can be found in Africa, with the efforts to get people on the internet and bridge the "digital divide". Who cares if these people don't have clean water, reliable food supply and stable government? We have to get them on the internet and downloading porn right away!!!

You'd think that...but most people are actually rather smitten with their own culture - what they want is the trappings of capitalism not to pack up and leave - you actually have to talk to them to know this though :)

Well I do think mawilson has a point. Its however, only half of the equation- when you take from one side, the other side gets heavier. And where it gets heavier, those that slim will want to take back, even if it means crossing the equal sign.

If only the equation could get balanced... and no- its not an excuse to be 100% pro-third world for everybody. Wanna fatten up? Fine. Just not at the expense of everyone else.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Peej,

Frosty Wooldridge...isn't that the guy that believes the US is going to fracture a la Kosovo because people speak multiple languages? Immigrants are disease laden (i.e Leprosy, TB, Chagas). He doesn't believe in legal immigration either. So anybody on this site would not make his buddy list. Who would have guessed that a guy named after a snowman has issues.

FROSTY WOOLDRIDGE

AGE: 58

LOUISVILLE, COLO.

The author of hundreds of opinion columns, Frosty Wooldridge believes he knows a thing or two about immigration. It's not a pretty picture he paints.

#######-fighting, animal sacrifice, Santeria sorcery, staged dog fights -- these are some of the nasty things illegal aliens bring us, Woolridge writes in his 2004 book Immigration's Unarmed Invasion: Deadly Consequences. There's genital mutilation -- clitorectomies -- that come to us courtesy of illegal non-European immigrants ("What if your daughter married a man who insisted your granddaughter undergo this operation?"). If you go to places like Wal-Mart or the movies, he warns, "you're breathing air that may be carrying hepatitis." Tuberculosis, head lice and hepatitis are showing up in our classrooms -- part of what Wooldridge calls immigrants' "disease jihad." Thanks to donations from illegals, blood supplies may be contaminated with a deadly parasite that will destroy your heart.

Not worried yet about the ways of "barbaric" immigrants? Consider the toilet habits of the undocumented. Somali immigrants, Wooldridge warns, "never used a toilet or washed their hands before being plunked down in America." Mexicans "do not wash their hands after using bathroom facilities." Then Wooldridge suggests in his book that readers think about just who it is who prepares their food.

An Army veteran, Wooldridge claims to have written articles for 18 magazines, along with "hundreds" of editorials in major American newspapers. He says he bicycled 100,000 miles through six continents over the course of 25 years. He has taught math and science and has been a tractor-trailer driver, bartender, dance teacher, ski instructor, heavy equipment trainer, cardiac catheterization technician, personal trainer and lifestyle coach. He has appeared on scores of television and radio shows. But what he does not have is any background in immigration.

That hasn't prevented him from offering up his opinions. "I don't want to see my country taken over ... and have them make the Southwest a slime pit Third World country like Mexico," he told a Las Vegas audience in early 2005. Later, in a letter to the editor, he complained about California, "with its nightmare gridlock, schools trashed, hospitals collapsing, drug gangs and overall chaos generated by a Third World mob of illegal aliens." U.S. borders should have been sealed to legal and legal immigration the day after the Sept. 11 attacks, Woolridge added on one Web site. If that doesn't happen soon, he said, "this country will collapse into internal civil conflict in this decade."

Gotta go sooner or later.

No.

Most people who have lived here their whole lives don't wash their hands after using the bathroom either.

"I don't want to see my country taken over ... and have them make the Southwest a slime pit Third World country like Mexico,"
Actually, I hope that's exactly what happens to it. The more people that immigrate down there, the less that are coming up here.

he complained about California, "with its nightmare gridlock, schools trashed, hospitals collapsing, drug gangs and overall chaos generated by a Third World mob of illegal aliens."
Not to mention the liberal politics and high taxes. Edited by akdiver

He made it into the Denver Post didn't he?

Regardless of his past posts (which I have never read) he has a point with this article (which never mentioned any of the above statements). But that fact remains...if he said that water runs downhill and that the earth revolves around the sun...would he be a lying sack of sh*t based on anything else he ever said? I would say, no. ;)
