RIALTO, Calif. — Police in Rialto say an 8-year-old girl has been found hanged in her bedroom and investigators are trying to determine if it was suicide or an accident.
...and why is this national news?

What about all the other kids that will die today. Are they not newsworthy too?

I think the most important question here is, for PETA's sake, how much leather was in that belt.

Good point. Maybe not having her parents affected her deeply and if they passed away she probably just wanted to be with them.

sad..i had a client whose brother hung himself in the closet ..the brother was 9 and the client found him./.he was 16...never got over it....still to this day..he has the guilt..as will the family.

.i assume it was suicide

News like this makes me wonder if one charitable smile from a stranger, or a hug from a friend, teacher, brother, parent...would have prevented such a tragedy. :(

my heart goes out to the grandmother, because if something happened to her child, then its a double tragedy, because not only the suffering and grief of a child, but now also a grandchild, and if it was a case of an abusive mother or father the child got taken away from and grandma got a second chance at trying to get this "raising a child", then again, double tragedy, double the grief...

as for an 8 yr old not knowing how to do these things, look around you, look at the news, TV, etc...

between CSI, forensic files, xfiles type shows, not much left for a child... and if not that, then yet another child got abducted somewhere or ran away, this no longer is a beautiful scene from times past, we dont play out till dinnertime without or parents checking in on us till then... our children play out in the backyard or at a friends nearby, carries a cellphone so he/she can check in, and we spend our days worrying about who and what might be out there, ready to harm them....

The sad part about that is that people feel they can't innocently hug or even smile at a child for fear of being accused of something improper... :(

You're absolutely right. I don't even want to TALK to children I see on the street, for fear of being accused of something. Nope. No way, no how. They could be sitting there with a broken leg after just having fallen off their bicycle for all I care. I'm not going to take a chance on ruining my life. It's just not worth it.

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

Dude, you seriously need to lighten up. Get laid or something.

Um this is a suicide not some joke. There is a place and time for jokes. This is not one of them.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

That's part of the kids on milk cartons syndrome. There's no massive increase on crimes against kids but there is a heightened fear of something bad happening to your kid. Part of it is media hype and part it is due to the decline in the birth rate so your 1 or 2 kids become even more precious to the parent.

It could just as easily have been a tragic accident as suicide - 8 year olds have been known to stick their heads in stupid places in the past, my 9 year old does that stuff even now. I don't think he needs a lock on his door though - he doesn't need that much privacy.

Whatever happened, it is a tragedy, poor kid.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I think that's a growing problem that's not been really discussed in public. The downside of raising awareness of people who prey on kids leads to ordinary adults being afraid to talk or be seen with kids and kids thinking every adult is some kind of a sicko.

I don't know about that. What is scary to think is that if we had a child walk for a mile or so alone or even stand somewhere which is not that busy alone, I think there is a good chance that in the US some sick person would kidnap them. While I agree the chance of a kid being kidnapped isn't 100% but if a kid happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, there are more than enough ill individuals who would.

Just the other day I saw on the news a case of a lady who was arrested because they found kids in her freakin freezer. How did they find them, a kid escaped and ran to a neighbor.

It is sad - and parents are overwhelmed because they have to do everything themselves... In Nepal neighbord will think nothing of leaving their children with a neighbor(or even a neighbor's foreign DIL like me :) ) if they need to run out to the market or whatever. And the kids are so trusting, it is refreshing to see but a sad reflection on how paranoid society is in America.
