Recieved my wife EAD card today (expires 12/12/09).

Called up SS to verify what document are needed and was told that my wife can not get ss because her B1 Visa is now expired. The lady stated that I need to call IRS to get a tax Id. Was hoping that someone knows a little more and can give us some tips. Was planning on going to SS office with Foreign Passport, EAD card and try our luck.

Brief history

Wife entered legally was inspected on a B1/B2 visa. Then she overstayed and now her visa expired last month. Not sure if she can get SS but wanted to try anyway. Any input appreciated.

Also we wanted to get a Non-drivers Id so she doesnt have to carry her passport around and in NY they require an SS.

Happy Holidays everyone .

More update on our progress.

Went to Social Security today with:

1-EAD CARD

2-BIRTH CERTIFICATE

3-MARRIAGE LICENSE

4-PASSPORT

Passport had the original name so brought marriage license as proof of new name.

Took us about 1hr to get through security but once we got in took 10mins and it went smooth.

We didnt need i-94 or valid visa which was our major concern just the items listed above. So in 2 weeks

wife should have her SS# (valid only with EAD).

Hello, I've noticed under your signature that you expedite the process of your I-765. How did you do this? What are the basis to expedite the process? Thanks.

I expedited because of hardship. At the end of the year my job was laying off and also my wifes mother has been in and out of the hospital and i explained to them that my wife wanted to help out because the bills were building up. Currently I found a new job and will be Starting on Jan 5 so I thank god for that. Job didnt lay off as yet but its coming around.

Congratulations everyone! Sorry Eli/Barrow that you are so frustrated - I can only imagine how you feel being happy for others but waiting every day for your own good news. I bet your service request will start something moving, you wait and see! Good luck to you...

As for me, I was at the Social Security office yesterday to get the name changed on my SS card. I have one from years ago when I was here on a J-1, so I just wanted the name changed to my married one. I was literally first in line at the office and was in and out of there in about ten minutes! Yippee! I should get the new card in the mail in about two weeks, then it will be off to the DMV. We also added me to my husband's bank account while we had all the documents with us and were out and about, so it was a productive day!

What's going of for everyone else? Oh yes, Happy New Year, friends!

Ok so the USCIS emailed me back about my Request for Service on the EAD ... here's what it reads.

U.S. Department of Homeland

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Friday, January 2, 2009

Dear

On 12/30/2008 you, or the designated representative shown below, contacted us about your case.

Type of service requested:-- Approaching Regulatory Time Frame

The status of this service request is: On 11/20/2008, we received your response to our request for additional evidence/information and the processing has resumed on your pending application. The Service will process your Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, within 90 days of the receipt of your missing evidence/information.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

My god what a bunch of #### heads. So basically they are saying, "nothing we can do, ride it out and tough #######. Wait the 90 days from the RFE was returned (we orginally applied exactly 90 days ago) of which this is day 43".

I'm so unbelievably stressed out and f*cked off right now it's not true.

WOW!!!

I stopped checking this thread about a month ago around post 30 or 35, cause it became so utterly depressing for me, each additional day as I fell further and further behind.

For those not familiar, I was in very eager anticipation to reach a milestone therefor allowing me to join the new US Army special forces selection program before my 30th birthday. I now will clearly not as I turn 30 in a little more than a month from now. But I am being positive and we'll see what happens.

Regardless, I got back from holidays and low and behold, FINALLY a glimmer of hope in my mailbox. My ASC Appointment Notice, biometrics, for Jan 13th! In Providence, RI no less adding at least a little sting to it. (I wanted and am FAR closer to Boston.) I was originally going to do a walk-in in Boston once I got the letter but now not so sure. Anyone successful at this in Providence? And Can one goto another location?

So, it only took a little over 2 months which most people get in two weeks. I am hoping now I will be back to a 'normal' timeline if such a thing exists. But at least I had a brief smile on my face when I opened it.

By the time this is all done with, if we are successful (God willing), I am probably going to jump off a building to celebrate. Oh, wait a min, make that a diving board! ;)

Congratulations and good job are in order to all these recent developments I have been reading here. And hang in there for those like me. Rosie if your altering the Spreadsheet can you add this development for me. Thanks so much! Appointment is for 1/13/2009 and I got it 1/1/2009.
