Step-Daugter's HS Graduation on Sunday

Hi all,

It's my Step-daughter's High School Graduation this Sunday and Craig and I are absolutely stuck for ideas of what to get for her.

We don't have much money, but we'd like to get her something that she can keep and that will mean something to her in years to come.

Any ideas? We thought about Jewelry, but she has lots already, so that wouldn't really be special for her.

Go to "Things RemembereD" That store at the mall - get something engraved...a photo album, or jewelry box, or pen or something...

is she going to college right off? or is she going to be working for a bit? or traveling?

maybe you can find her an affordable laptop. you may find a good 2nd hand one on ebay or craigslist or if you can shell out $500 or so, check dell for a new one.

if she is starting work, maybe invest in a nice suit that she can wear to interviews. or a leather portfolio to carry on interviews to hold her resumes and notepads, etc.

if she will still be living at home, maybe you can upgrade her room - new curtains/blinds, fresh paint, a new rug, new bed linens, etc.

or if you have something old like a family heirloom, now could be the time to pass it along.

sometimes just treating her special for that day is just as good as a material "gift"...

take her and her best friend (or boyfriend) out to a nice celebration dinner

if she's a 'girly girl' maybe you can treat her to a special day at the salon - hair, manicure, pedicure, facial.

I think it depends on the person. My brother would have loved just money...but I would have died if my parents just gave me money..It's so impersonal...almost like they couldn't think of anything else to get me??

LOL! my freshman roomie got a copy of that! is that a standard American thing????

Thanks to all for the suggestions so far.

We've ruled out giving her cash as she will be getting alot from other relatives and we'd like to get her something special from her Dad and me, so she can say in years to come that her Dad gave her this for her Graduation. She lives with her Mom right now and does not lack for anything materially, ie. has her own computer, car, etc. She will be going off to college in the fall. I like Karo's idea of something personalized. I'll see if there is a store near us.

I got a lot of use out of nice suitcase my aunt gave me. Small enough for a carry-on, but large enough for a trip home from college, with rollers...

The suit idea is a great one—my Gram bought me a suit during my senior year of college, and we made a nice afternoon out of shopping, with a lunch and everything. That way, you know she's getting something she likes, something that will fit her, and you have time for some bonding as well.

If she's anything like me, she'll be going on a zillion interviews, and my black suit served me very well!

My step daughter to be just graduated on Monday. She got a lap top and a mulit function machine. She loved those.

She got a bunch of jewelry and cash.

Is she moving out? If she is something nice for her new place would be good.

I was just to a graduation party last Sunday.

A couple of interesting things I saw were:

1. A small microwave with poptarts and ramen noodles inside.

2. A round laundry basket with essentials like plastic plates, cups, shampoo, toothpaste, clothespins, etc. (all from the Dollar Store).

3. A money tree - no kidding! A styrofoam cone from a craft store, with fan-folded dollar bills arranged artistically to make them look like leaves!

Personally I loved my little black and white TV that I got (it was the 70's you know)!

When the daughter of a really good friend graduated in 2005 and I asked her what she wanted, she asked me to get her a crock-pot, and I gladly complied.

how 'bout a digital camera so that when she goes off to college she can send some photos back to the parents so they know she's still alive?
