Nice of you to notice. Sometimes its hard getting by without yet another of brother peejay's Houston Chronicle articles.

easy to notice a thread that was in use days ago ... then magically appears ... it's sort of a deja vu feeling ...

a quick look at the posting dates ... and which of peejays followers posted ... and the rest is ... well ... couldn't let it go could ya?

as for the Houston Chron ... it is the local paper and yet I see more of it on VJ with lots of colorful commentary ...

Actually, the most interesting angle of the posts would be evident if folks would actually click on the links. Readers get to comment on the articles if they register. The fact is that the vast majority of Houstonians are fed up with the invasion of illegal aliens and the sancuary city status of Houston. Half a million illegal aliens have not been a plus for most of the inhabitants of our city. The corruption of our city government is obvious. The few are getting rich at the expense of the many. The local taxpayers are getting screwed. We subsidize these pricks' illegal workers and have had enough of this nonsense. Not to mention the collateral damage from the illegal riff-raff and criminal element that rides on the coat tails of the masses of illegal aliens.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

The connection would ring true if public funds were not used to fund pro-bono practice... and there's a lot more than just someone's immigration status behind that one.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

And the problem itself should bother anyone that is concerned. That is not what should be the discussion's topic... instead what to do about it. Some folks just want to put a really tight band-aid over the problem and ignore its roots... I can guarantee that that is not what one would consider a permament fix. Unfortunately some mindsets can't get around the idea of spending less to prevent the problem that what it costs to be gung-ho in fighting the problem once it starts.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

No sh*t. So you noticed? Ever been to Houston? Come on down. It would be a real education. Ignorance is bliss.

Excess humidity and occasional flooding aside, I like Houston.

Isn't the root of the illegal immigration problem that mexico is poor and america is not, so if they work here illegally they can make a much better living? So we just need to figure out how to match our economy up with mexico's... down with ours or up with theirs, and there won't be so much incentive for illegal immigration?

I think we should built the fence, but not some goobery chain link fence with razor wire, we need something awesome, china has a totally cool wall, I think we need to make our own groovy wall (possibly topped with razor wire... and sharks with fricken lasers on their heads!). I don't know how many jobs that wall would provide but if it's an awesome enough wall it should employ a lot of people for quite a while, including shark trainers!. My other plan for dealing with illegal immigration involves a giant moon laser, that I like to call the death star...

Mexico is pretty uneven as far as wealth goes. You have some of the wealthiest people in the world side by side with some of the very poorest. Mexico has a big problem with underemployment and who wants to work on a farm for $10 a day when a few hundred miles away you can make that in an hour...

Its interesting to see the contrast - compare somewhere like Mazatlan (a fairly historic town) with somewhere like Puerto Vallarta and the difference is striking (hard to believe its the same country).

Drug cartel violence has claimed thousands of lives across Mexico this year. Nearly 800 people have been killed this year in Ciudad Juarez, a hard-scrabbled city of about 1.3 million people across the Rio Grande from El Paso.

More than two dozen gunshot victims have been taken across the border for medical treatment in El Paso, prompting security lockdowns at the county hospital and raising concerns in Texas that the violence could spill across the border.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5965004.html

Violence is violence. A bullet does not differentiate between one human or the other.

This article is specific to one region where there is no actual fence being put up because it is considered a fail. Instead it was proposed to put up a virtual fence of cameras and security systems all along the boarder that would be watched. That is considerable man power to watch and keep track of something like that.

In other areas along the boarder such as California there has been as many at 50 murders in Tijuana due to this drug war.

Of course the murders is all about money:

In Idaho we had two twin brothers take $100,000 down to California/Mexico boarder to purchase a large quantity of marijuana for sale in the Northwest. Those two boys were brutally murdered by the Mexican cartel and their $100,000 taken.

If you look at the chain of supply and demand what is the majority of the drugs being sold and where is the demand coming from? Obviously the demand is coming from Americans to the North of Mexico since the problem lines our southern boarder. What kinds of drugs are they smuggling to be killing at this rate? Every heard of Mexican red weed? It's reach is far. It is most popular in southern states such as Texas but reach as far North as Canada. From the movie Blow we learn that Weed doesn't make nearly as much profit as harder drugs such as Cocaine but one could argue that to reduce the amount of violence and murders we may have to reconsider legislation on the drug enforcement policy.

Former President Carter in 1979 campaigned on the decriminalization of marijuana and maybe it's time to revisit that. I suspect that if American citizens who continue to smoke illegal drugs regardless of federal laws may choose to grow their own weed thus decreasing the demand in the supply chain then wouldn't it be possible that the violence would also decrease? The campaign to stop recreational drug use is a fail. If Americans realize that the weed they are smoking or the coke they are snorting has blood on it would they be so inclined to continue their use? With addiction to cocaine possibly so. With weed maybe they would rather choose to grow their own if the federal law decriminalized it.

Problem here is that not many people, specially those that are anti-immigration, know what is Mazatlan or Puerto Vallarta and will never know what's like earning 10 dlls a day.
