Hi guys.

So I was just wondering, just an off-topic thread.

How do all of you keep from going insane while waiting for your work permit and status change papers?

Personally, I journal and have some home-improvement projects in my in-laws home. They have a big property with a few old buildings, they needed bricks to build a few pathways. They had told me that the were a couple of maple-syrup boilers in their property from the turn of the century and since I'm an archaeologist I decided to excavate them. It's a win-win situation since I have something to do and they get the bricks they need for the home projects.

How about you? what do you do?

At first I was doing a lot of VJ and Online portfolio checks  then I realised it was pulling me in and driving me nuts so I started helping out my husband with work remotely :) We've worked together in the same industry (same offices) for the past 3 years, so I can give him a hand pretty much any time. This is also a win-win, cause he didn't have to work weird hours and while it kept me busy during the day it also gave us full evenings to ourselves. + it keeps me in shape professionally so to speak and gives me a chance to study US market a bit before I start job hunting

My husband is going to English classes, volunteering at Habitat for Humanity, and doing ceramic art - in the house and taking a class. Plus being a great house husband - cooking dinner, doing laundry, etc. He long ago finished the "honey do" project list.

He has gone to some job searching workshops and has gotten some leads - which he cannot pursue at this time - ugh!

Keep your sanity!

Naaa, I'm kidding paisano since I had an OPT working permit (sadly and luckily at the same time) I've worked ever since I graduated back in May 07 until now. No time for rest but 3 weeks when we got married religiously.

Hmm, how do I keep myself sane? It's a tough question...:-) There were days that I thought I lost my sanity, in the sense that I felt so bored and useless. My husband keeps on reminding me that I'm worth a whole lot and that even if I'm just staying at home doing house works, that means a whole lot. I'm not used to staying at home so it's kind of "verrrrry tough" for me... I have a chem. eng'g degree back home and had been in the work force for 8 years. Shifting to a housewife is tough, plus the waiting for the progress of my papers can sometimes drive me nuts.

What I do is I keep myself busy doing big projects at home. I made a flower garden in our front yard, re-arranged the things in the garage, re-decorate the house, and re-paint the kitchen and the stairway. I'm also in the process of finishing my re-painting in our bedroom. I'm done repainting the bathrooms and hang new shower curtain... Now, hubby has to get use with the new curtain in our bedroom and the new color of the paint...:-) I also cleaned up the closets, and put some old things in the donation boxes... It keeps me sane but there are times that it drives my husband "crazy"... because he can't find things anymore...:-) either I throw it away, put it in the garage, or had dumped it in the trash...:-) I can't just sit and sleep, I have to be active or I'll lose my sanity... it's tough but it's fun too...:-)

Now, I just hope my EAD will arrive soon... can't wait to get back to the work force...

Same thing Sha...I have been cleaning and tiding up since the first day I got here. I have this thing with the house, like we have to know each other...so far, so good.

It helps a lot, I re-organize everything in a way that I can find them easier and this make things easy for him too. I have a teen step-daughter who sometimes looks at me wondering "what is the problem with her, anyway?", but I just go my way.

I've also got involved in the garden, something that I simply LOVE doing, and it looks a lot better now, but it is not yet finished. I've been studying for the driver's license test - boring stuff and scrapping the old wallpaper in the kitchen. Next is painting projects and redecorating some of the rooms.

I can't say that I feel bored nor insane at the moment, and I try to keep myself busy until I can fully grasp my new life here. So far, I love being with my husband and daughter and I feel very happy.

All home improvement items for me!

Also I go to the gym very often. I find it's been good for my sanity and frustration.

The VJ board has definitely been a source of distraction, venting, entertainment and support!

Where do you live? Is it you or your husband doing Habitat? I used to volunteer for the Atlanta Habitat. But since we have moved to Chicago I haven't been active.

Werd! Hehehe

It helps that my wife like watching me play Playstation. She says it's like a movie for her. So it's cool.

I've been doing some gardening too since my mother in law is into that, also helping out at farmer's market and such. It's a very small rural are here so I have to be careful who I actually tell that I'm Mexican. I've had a couple people freak out.

As my wife has to continue working I'm kept busy by being a stay home dad with our seven month old twins. That takes up all my time bar a few minutes each day!

We've also just bought a bigger house and move within the next couple of weeks, (we complete the sale on July 31st), so I imagine any spare time will be taken up with home improvement projects thereafter.

Once things settle back down I'd like to do an online degree here to make myself more employable once I decide to return to work, (I've got enough money saved up to live off for a couple of years so aren't relying on Laura to fund me.) I've always worked for myself back in the UK, so am a little apprehensive about getting employed by someone over here in the USA, but a degree should help nonetheless.
