The Americans value their constitution and the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment deals with the right to bear arms. Here is the price that ordinary Americans are paying for the privilege

- 8 children a day die in murders, suicides and accidents involving guns

- since John F. Kennedy was assinated more Americans have died from gunshot wounds at home than died in all the wars of the 20th century

- Osama bin Laden would need at least nine twin towers like attacks each year to equal what Americans do to themselves every year with guns.

- Murder rates in LA, NY and Chigago were approaching the hightest in the world (30 per 100,000) until moves were made in late 20th century to restrict access to guns to teenagers. (The NRA wants these moves reversed)

If Osama bin Laden had had more sense, instead of launching a terrorist attack, he would simply have provided financial backing to the NRA.

while it's a tragedy, i agree with kazan. specifically, the grandmother can carry a concealed weapon in her purse. however, it seems the purse was not zipped up nor was the gun in a holster. i cannot fathom why anyone would put a gun in a purse where it would be banged up by the contents in the purse.

I don't completely disagree with the idea she can either. The problem for me is whether or not the circumstances really warranted carrying a concealed weapon loose in your purse in the first place.

exactly why i stated the purse should have been zipped up and the gun in a holster, which usually includes a hammer strap.

I hope i never get ot the point where I feel I need to carry or live around an arsenal of firepower. If I'm that scared to live somewhere and walk around my Sam's Club, I need to find a different place to live.

If Charles owns a gun, maybe we should review the laws?

why?

Sorry, I've just always had this irrational fear of Charles with a gun. Go figure! :innocent:

charles has been a gun owner for about 38 years......have you been afraid for 38 years?

Are you trying to find out how old I am? Cause that's between me and USCIS, thank you very much!

The article said she is a magistrate. There may have been a very valid reason why she was carrying the weapon. She was just careless with it and caused a horrific accident with her granddaughter.

"Gun laws should be more strict"...

No... Gun toting grandmothers need to be more diligent. She is 100% at fault.

If the gun laws were more strict, the grandmother wouldn't have a gun in her bag in which the child would still be alive.

Guns don't solve the problem in the USA being a safer place.

where did the article state the child was dead ? link please ....

The girl was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and was recovering Monday afternoon after surgery, said police department spokesman Brick Lewis. Hospital officials would not release her condition after the operation.

that's rather simplistic isn't it?

if the kid didn't exist, this never would have happened either.

Hence, why we should have stronger breeding laws.

But, to address Mel Gibson's (oops! Willy Wallace) totally stupid and insane use of flawed inductive reasoning... No Gun =/= No accident involving stupid kid. Perhaps granny had a knife, or a nail file, or can of tomato paste instead. Any one of these items, in the hands of a sub-moronic child (as evidenced in this case), could have caused just as much damage and possibly worse.

Your use of logic is flawed. I suggest you refrain from trying again until you've mastered the laws of causality.

Seems as though I hit a nerve lol.

I've never liked guns and would rather not have them in my home nor anywhere near me. However, my husband believes in the right to bear arms and I have learned to respect that right.

In this case, there is clear negligence on the part of the grandmother. If we do make gun laws stricter, it would be to make sure that people get educated about them. But even with education, there is always the question of putting that "education" to good use. Just as there are bad drivers on the road in spite of driving lessons and driving tests, there will always be irresponsible gun owners. Taking away the rights of others just because some people are not responsible is, in my opinion, totally in contradiction to what the United States proudly stands for ... freedom, liberty and justice for all.

Edited to say.... I'm actually distracted by the numbers in the article:

4 year old granddaughter

47 year old grandmother

68 year old mother in law to the grandmother (that is, she's the great grandmother)

 I'm only a year younger than the grandmother

Grandmother with a GUN! Don't mess with granny. I think there should be an age limit on gun permits. I see many old granny aren't as bright compared to when their younger. That's what I see.

Uh...the woman is 47...hardly elderly.

Far more children die from poisoning or motor vehicle accidents than from guns, but no one suggests we outlaw household chemicals, pharmaceuticals or cars. A gun is a tool, and like any tool, common sense needs to be used.
