It is rumored that gas prices may actually reach $10/gallon.

now is the time to open up a moped shop.

Business at the bike shop is insane right now. People are digging out old Schwinns and Huffys from their garages, then paying us $60 to tune it up, $50 for new tires, etc. Plus we've been selling a lot of $3000-$7000 bikes the past couple of months. As for the cheapo heavy-####### bikes ($309.99) we've sold out of them 3 times already. The manufacturer has run out of them too, so we're stuck without cheapo bikes. Some people leave and go to Wal-Mart. Smart ones buy a lower-end road bike instead ($750)

Our shop (repair area) can hold about 30 bikes comfortably. We currently have 58 awaiting service or pick up. It's a little crowded back there.

That's great to hear....especially during these hard economic times.

Do you guys actually see a lot of Hummers on the streets? I don't. Never have. Maybe 1-2 a year.

Come on down here. There are still lots of them. Not as bad as it was but there are still way too many.

I don't think their owners would even notice the price difference... not exactly the poorest sections of society.

I see at least one Hummer everytime I go out.

But what I see more of than those is trucks. (I live in the land of testosterone :P ).

The trendy chickas who have been driving SUV's because they were 'cool' are switching soon to hybrids and/or other 'cute' cars.

I was reading actually that jobs in the "green sector" will be in demand. But I am wondering if the "go green" mentality that people are is not just a fad? Once the prices go back down (if tehy do....not sure if they will but remember I think gas prices are more expensive anyways in summer because more people travel in summer I think)....people will go back into their ways again of becoming crazy for gas.

I doubt the prices will ever go down that far. I just wish more cities would embrace the idea of public transportation instead of sticking their heads in the sand about it. Far more expensive than gas is the cost there is to keep a stupid car in the first place. Car payments, insurance, repairs, maintenance. Quite a racket, even if you remove one of those things from the equation.

The price of oil is mainly from speculators. The range that price is in now cannot be sustained. It is a bubble that will break just as the housing market bubble and the .com bubble both broke. I really doubt if we ever see $10/gallon gas.

...also, worldwide demand has shot up while the supply has reached its peak.

This is the reason why I don't really like the idea of becoming energy independent. If we could somehow completely ween ourselves off of foreign oil, that only leaves more for China and Russia, and prices would fall for them. As their energy costs lower, it allows them to lower production costs on goods they export hurting us even more.

What is $6 a gallon really for an American, it is peanuts! We have it so good here and have no idea how good we have it, so I say if you want to drive that Hummer or SUV or sports car or that truck, then by all means now is the time to go buy one and drive it, prices have never been so low ever! What great deals there are on new big trucks and SUVs and sports cars. It is Un-American to drive those stupid looking tin can cars the rest of the world travels around in!

I don't care if it costs me $300 to fill my car up with gas because eventually there will probably be a point where it's too expensive for the average american and then I'll benefit from other peoples misfortune

China and India, not China and Russia. Russia is an oil exporter, not importer.

I do agree with your argument, however. The Chinese and Indians are insulated

from the reality of the world oil prices at the moment, but their governments can't

keep subsidizing these prices indefinitely. We'll squeeze them out sooner or later.

How expensive does gas need to be before we can start drilling offshore and in ANWR, build more refineries, and build more nuclear power stations?

As for public transportation being the answer, I think it might be enlightening for people to take a look at the maps of some of our major metropolitan areas, and note where people live, where they work, and just where new rail systems could conceivably be built. It's really not very realistic without razing the cities and starting from scratch. And there are reasons why people are living further and further from their workplaces which must be taken into consideration.

Cities will eventually convert themselves. I live near downtown minneapolis. Many buildings are either being converted to condos, or are being torn down and rebuilt as condos/townhouses. High gas prices will eventually lead to the end of the single family home.
