Hi,

I submitted my wife's police certificate along with her DS230. The question is, will that police certificate be forward to the US embassy in Tokyo (where she will be interviewed), or does she need another copy of police certificate at the interview? She spent 8 hours on round-trip bus last time just to get her police certificate, and we will be kicking ourselves if we need another copy...

YMMV

we used the online payment system to generate the barcode cover sheet so we didn't receive the DS230 instruction sheet before we submitted it. However, we are also working with a lawyer and she said we needs to send in the police certificate along with the DS230.

I've never heard of NVC requesting a police certificate. If you sent it to them, call them and ask if they'll forward it. In the future, don't send things unless they are asked for. If you can't get a firm answer from NVC, then its up to you whether you want to risk a delay in the visa or get another one.

Follow the existing process instead of inventing your own.

Talked to the lawyer on the phone, she said NVC did request the police certificate. But NVC will forward all the stuff to the Embassy so we won't need another copy.

um...I assume you are the USC and your husband is the beneficiary? Police certificate is required either at the interview or when you send in the DS230 package (depends on NVC instruction). It's to demonstrate that the beneficiary has a "clean" record and it is ussed at the country/city where he lives after age of 16. Since your husband is already in US, I have no idea if a police certificate is required..someone might know this better than me..

I believe you will need another copy of the police certificate. Someone posted in the forum (can't remember where) that the spouse got denied the interview because the police certificate was not available.

Nonetheless, do read what they say here:

http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3741.html

The following documents must be available for the interview:

* Appointment Letter

* Passport(s) valid for six months beyond the intended date of entry into the United States

* Police Certificate(s)

* Birth Certificate(s)

* Court and prison records, if applicable

* Military records, if applicable

* Color photographs

* Marriage Certificate, if applicable

* Evidence of financial support (e.g. Affidavit of Support, a notarized offer of employment, or evidence of assets)

* Divorce decree or death certificate of spouse, if applicable

* Family-based cases: All original documents used to establish the relationship between the petitioner and the applicant

* Employment-based cases: A recent letter from the prospective employer confirming the essential elements of the job offer

That is the link for which documents to send to NVC .... it includes the police certificate.

All the documents which everyone states that are supposed to be for the interview only are on the link to be sent directly to NVC first .... I would get a spare copy of everything to take to the interview also incase they lose something or don't forward it on.

So, yes .... all originals (or certified originals etc) are to be sent to NVC along with a photocopy of each.

According to the documentation i have from the NVC (case complete, interview date assigned), its forwarding everything to the Tokyo Embassy. NVC requested we send to them all original or certified copies of documents, so we sent police certificate, marriage and birth certificates along with notarized translations. I also thought a 2nd copy of the police certificate would be useful to have, just in case, but the japanese police in our area denied us additional copies, they said we get one certificate only. So, we are really hoping nothing gets lost! It seems like japan police certificates are handled somewhat differently from other countries? its officially sealed in an envelope with a stamp like, 'to be open by US authority only' so we've never even read it or photocopied it. ...hmmm, i hope i didn't marry a criminal! :)

if your embassy is an appointment post you need to send all the original/certified copy docs required by NVC. mind u police cert must be original.then all the original docs will be returned to you on your interview date except the police cert.
