yikes..and sad

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Well I hope it isn't true for his sake, however pancreatic cancer doesn't need to be a death sentence although the survival rate is not high, generally because it is often discovered too late for surgical intervention.

A very good friend of mine was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a year ago. She underwent surgery and they removed the tumour. What often happens is that the tumour wraps itself around the arterial and venous blood vesselssupplying other organs in the abdomen. They were able to completely remove her tumour as while it had start to wrap around, it hadn't infiltrated the blood vessels yet. The surgery was incredibly painful - I guess any surgery regarding the pancreas is - and then she underwent 6 months of chemo after she recovered from the surgery as there were 19 lymph nodes also affected. Last October she was pronounced cancer free. She had a long and slow time recovering from the chemo but now, a year later after her diagnosis she is more or less back to normal. So, if Swayze has had surgery and is undergoing chemo there is still a chance that he can defeat this thing. Let's hope that the rumours of its spreading to other areas of the body are not true.

Here his doctor spoke out...

Patrick Swayze, who starred in Dirty Dancing and Ghost, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, his doctor says.

"Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far," Dr. Patrick George says in a statement. "All of the reports stating the time frame of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic."

The actor's rep adds: "Patrick is continuing his normal schedule during this time, which includes working on upcoming projects. The outpouring of support and concern he has already received from the public is deeply appreciated by Patrick and his family."

Risk factors

The vast majority of pancreatic cancers occur in people older than 65. Other important risk factors include:

  • Race. Black men and women have a higher risk of pancreatic cancer.
  • Sex. More men than women develop pancreatic cancer.
  • Cigarette smoking. If you smoke, you're two to three times more likely to develop pancreatic cancer than nonsmokers are. This is probably the greatest known risk factor for pancreatic cancer, with smoking associated with almost one in three cases of pancreatic cancer.
  • Abnormal glucose metabolism. Having diabetes may increase your risk of pancreatic cancer. Insulin resistance or high insulin levels may also be risk factors for pancreatic cancer.
  • Hereditary pancreatitis. Your chances of developing pancreatic cancer increase if you have hereditary chronic pancreatitis. Hereditary pancreatitis (HP) is a rare genetic condition marked by recurrent attacks of pancreatitis — a painful inflammation of your pancreas.
  • Excess weight. People who are very overweight or obese may have a greater risk of developing pancreatic cancer than do people of normal weight.
  • Diet. A diet high in animal fat and low in fruits and vegetables may increase your risk of pancreatic cancer.
  • Chemical exposure. People who work with petroleum compounds, including gasoline and other chemicals, have a higher incidence of pancreatic cancer than people not exposed to these chemicals.

Interesting. Even more interesting is that my friend had none of those risk factors, except for being 66 at the time.
