SSN after entering the United States

My wife's visa was approved in feb and she came in US in the same month, on the DS 230 part 2 we selected to option to send the SSN , only today i got the welcome leter from USCIS with A number bot no SSN yet.

Can someone tell if selecting the option on DS 230 is enough to get the SSN or shall i go to hte SSN office and how much time it takes to get the SSN if its done via DS 230

It can take SSA a month or so to issue the card, if it has been more than 30 days since entry on the visa, then visit your local SSA office.

hi,

its a waste of time... to wait.. i waited for 1 month and nothing arrived. then went to local office.. applied in person by filling form SS-5 and took with my passport and original birth certificate. SSN card arrived in 10 days

I never heard of anyone getting a SSN just by checking the box on the DS-230.

If the embassy didn't send the electronic visa information to SSA, the information sent was incomplete or something was invalid, or your name & date of birth are too similar to someone elses, a SS card won't automatically be issued unless you visit the SSA office and apply in person. If information was incomplete or something was invalid or your name was too similar, SSA will correct the errors and allow the SSN to be issued (interview will be easier, however). If nothing was ever sent to SSA, they will process your application normally as a first time applicant.

Therefore, I suggest after 5-10 business days from entry, you should have gone the SS office and apply in person so they check if the card is being processed or accept your application otherwise. Some people (like me) do get them automatically. Contrary to popular belief, it is not possible to accidentally get two SSN's if you apply again in person too early.

We went to Social Security on Monday 3/3/08 , My step kids had arrived 3/1/08. Both of them were already in the system. They came as CR2. One was processed Monday and the other will be processed Wedensday so as not ot have the numbers to close together. This was my experience.
