Okay, I don't have any hard evidence of what I'm about to say, but my professor in Physiological Psychology (which is basically neurology) told the class about several in-depth studies that have been going on (some of which which he's been a part of) revolving around the effects of NyQuil D. So while I don't have the documentation in front of me at the moment, I believe what he said may have some merit.

It seems that a chemical in NyQuil D (and I don't recall which one at the moment) tends to cause wave after wave of horrific nightmares in those who use it. The really interesting part about this is that this side-effect hits women far more often than men.

When men have taken NyQuil D, they usually wake in the morning saying they've had "a few dreams but nothing too extraordinary." Contrast this with the opposite sex, where nine out of ten women who have tried NyQuil D claim they've experienced terrible nightmares all thorough the night.

The researchers looking over this phenomenon have no idea why this is at the moment (they merely assume it's due to some sort of difference between male and female biochemistry). One theory is that women are more likely to actually visit their doctor and report negative conditions, whereas men don't, so the statistics could be skewed in favor of women having more problems with the medication. Barring that hypothesis, however, the only other option would be that something within NyQuil D hits women a whole lot differently than it does men.

Anyway... I just thought the women on this board might think this is interesting, especially if any of them are prone to experiencing nightmares. Once again, I don't have any hard data for this and I'm only going on what my professor said, but considering the research is still ongoing, I doubt there would be a whole lot of documentation to find anyway. At the very least, it's good be aware. :)

I had that reaction from malaria prophylactics.

Work does the same for me

I took the stuff and the dreams where so weird not nightmares but very strange ones. Well after that i never touched it again. Then several years later my friend gave it to her son and he had horrible nightmares she called the doctor and they told her not to use it again. The impression she gave me was that they figured he was allergic to something in it. All i know is i wont ever use it again.

I've been on Tylenol #3 for a few days now and I'm having the most bizarre dreams.

Interesting... you may want to ask your prof if he knows off the top of his head if there are sexual dimorphisms in Opioid Receptor expression since this family of receptors are usually the ones involved in pain-modulation.

This could also involve serotonin receptors and their influence on sleep content (dreams) in males versus a stronger affinity for opioid receptors in females, depending on what I ask above. I wouldn't be surprised to learn of some metabolic byproduct from the liver that crosses the blood-brain barrier to play around with our neurons.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Maviwaro,

Good question. I'll ask him on Monday. It'll be interesting to see if he knows at this point and if he does, what the answer would be.

Number 6 & VJ Troll,

There are different types of NyQuil and this study only specifies one variety. Besides, the study itself admits that not every single person -- male or female -- is affected in this manner. While most women may experience this side-effect, there are still probably hundreds or thousands who do not as well.

I remember patients having similar problems with Valerian but didn't consider a gender link. Thinking back the people who mentioned problems were all female. They didn't complain of nightmares exactly but complained of very vivid dreams that were so realistic as to be distressing.

lol, I had to take NyQuil D in gel capsule form yesterday evening because I finally caught the flu bug that's been buzzing around a lot this year. Two capsules and half a glass of water later, I passed out for 12 hours. Slept like a baby and felt great this morning coz the fever broke sometime in the middle of the night.
