A Question for the Canadians: Do you plan to become a citizen?

I'm not really sure what the benefit is. Aside from voting and not being deported, the permanent resident seems to be pretty much the same as citizen. I think there may be benefits for estate purposes, but I'd have to re-read up on that.

Being a US citizen does mean reporting your income to the IRS no matter which country you live in. Granted, it should be all except if you don't live in the country, but it's more paperwork. By the time I'm eligible to become a citizen, the cost of doing it will probably have gone up yet again.

On the other hand, if you choose to live in a country on a long term basis, and you like the place. I sort of feel you should become a citizen.

Yep, due to my wifes work, I have to (thats all I can say,lol) There are other benefits beside being able to vote and not being deported, not exactly sure how it works, but the rules do differ a bit if your significant other dies and ur not a citizen!

I have applied for my citizenship and am just waiting for the interview and oath ceremony.

I can't think of any reason not to become a U.S. citizen. Who wouldn't love to have dual Canadian/US citizenship?

Also, my husband and I may spend equal amounts of time in Canada and the U.S. when we retire, so that way, we can come and go as we please. My husband would have to become a Canadian citizen before we can do this, of course.

Although, the thought of having to report my income to the IRS forever doesn't sit too well with me.

And I have changed my mind on things before.

I haven't really looked into it, but I recall reading that the gov't would take out a bigger chunk in taxes if ur not a citizen!

I don't think there would be any problems if your spouse dies after you have your 10 year card.....

I know my husband is planning on it. He wants to sponsor his brother into the U.S. He withdrew his Canadian citizenship application after our CIC fiasco and he will end up with dual from Chile and the U.S.
