my fiancée and my fiancee's mom sent me birthday gifts from the USA and as usual someone opened in Egypt before they delivered it to me

i really wonder why they doing that in Egypt ? why they always open the gifts or anything which come from the USA??!!!!

maybe they think it has a bomb LOL or maybe they want to steal it

I've had the same thing sending things into the US from the UK - I think if customs have any suspicions about the package then they can open it and make sure it is all ok.. Not great but

They probably want to see what is inside so they know what to charge you when you go pick it up at the post office.

I sent something to the philippines and they opened it and decided to charge my fiance a large sum of money because of there apraisal of its value. When she said she couldnt pay they lowered there fee to a much lower fee. She also told me to never send money cause they will take it out and keep it. Its sad but there is a lot of corruption there. Maybe thats the case in Eygypt to or maybe not.

I sent each of my friends who came to my wedding a group picture of all of us and me on my wedding day. It was a 5 x 7 picture in a $1 frame. I sent it via fedex and now, one of them got a bill for 15GBP, 30 times the actual value of the item! They wanted to charge them import and duty fees. Fedex says it is UK's Customs and Excise, I am still waiting to hear back. In any case, we are certainly NOT paying that! What a joke!!

In shipping to morocco it is opened in front of the person then they are charged, things he has sent to me are generally always opened and alot of times the items are broke....cant win

Shipping to china, the packages are occasionally openned. They are surely just checking to make sure it isn't something banned or dangerous. I always know when it's been openned, because it takes an additional 1-2 weeks. 90% of the time, they don't bother it though.

I've experienced that first hand as well when living in Egypt. Like another poster said, I also believe that it is mainly to determine the value of the content.

There are quite a few other countries out there that have the same procedure, including Bermuda. Every shipment, except for documents, is opened and you have to pay customs fees for everything, even birthday, Christmas, etc gifts .

Packages my fiancee sends me from Thailand are often opened. Once she sent me lots of different snacks including different flavored potato chips They slit each bag open but one.

When I send cards to her, they rarely get to her unless I send them global priority. The postman must be looking for money in the cards.
