Jon and I have developed a tradition of having a nice dinner somewhere (nothing super-fancy, just a place we both like), lots of booze, and an exchange of inexpensive gifts (cap: $20).

I understand why a lot of people object to it, and it is, as Jon says, "marketing bollocks." I guess we just use it as an excuse to get drunk.

I also don't know why the burden tends to fall on the guy. Guys sometimes need love reaffirmation too!

Deadpool, how about a toaster oven?

If it involves Cool Whip, count me in sister!

When I worked in grocery retail, I would see these middle aged men come in on VD, grab a bouquet of roses, a card, and a 12 pack of beer. It was funny and sad at the same time.

I'd take a twelve pack. Beer is one of the reason we are married now, so seems appropriate. :P

I read VD the wrong way when I first read the post.

Silly rabbit, you don't need an excuse! :P

I'm all about rationalizing bad habits. :)

Well, I don't claim to know what Joyce is up to for Valentine's Day, but I suspect that Cool Whip will be involved somehow...

Reddi Wip (Extra creamy) is much better than cool whip and its real whipped cream! Plus the spray can is much more conducive to art work!

Yikes! Don't let Joyce see that, or her head might explode!

yeah, Hallmark has banned us from showing our love to our SO's on any other day besides Valentine's :P

I think we should see it has a day we can do something extra special for our SO and it doesn't even have to be something that costs money...

I've never spent Valentine's Day with Alex but in the past I've celebrated by making an extra-special meal or baking a cake and decorating it.

Alex and I usually send parcels to each other throughout the year so in February we just coincide one to be delivered around the 14th...and usually there's a card (with kittens) on included ;)

We're not very romantic, though - we usually ask each other what we'd like, or at least check beforehand to make sure it's something we like!

He's getting the complete Futurama and complete Deadwood on DVD plus the requisite Jaffa cakes (it'd be wrong to send him a parcel without Jaffa cakes!)

I'm being given a webcam and Diablo 2 (a game we can play together online). The webcam sounds like a fantastic idea to me.

I've never heard of only the man giving something; everyone I know treats Valentine's Day as a two-way thing.

Mister Fancypants - I certainly wouldn't complain!

I have to say, in response to the OP, I would get irritated if my partner sent me flowers on V-Day all the time. I'd rather have him do something cute and free.

PS I have to admit here that um, we really didn't plan it like this, but it just so happens that V-Day is my anniversary. So, we'll be celebrating that holiday forever, I guess. :)

I just read this after I posted my last comment. We didn't plan to have VDay as our anniversary either. Hubby entered the country on Feb. 11, we had to get a wedding license, and it just so happened that the 14th was the only day I didn't have a late client.

I would prefer a meaningful gift rather than the standard flowers and chocolate (although the baby in my tummy would LOVE the chocolate!) For Xmas, hubby did a great job. We had been in an art gallery several months before and I commented on a piece I would like to have someday ... well, he remembered, went back there and got it.

I think one of the best gift I got form hubby was a DVD player he sent to me when I was still living in Canada...

but it wasn't the DVD player that was the best part of the gift.. he had filled the box with little pieces of paper that said,"I love you" ...he had handwritten them all too.... it totally made my day :D(L)(L)
