"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

If the military hierarchy can live with the idea of homosexuality in the service, why not just drop the 'no gays' policy?

I totally agree.

A gay soldier says he disclosed his sexuality to his superiors, even offering graphic proof, and was neither discharged nor reprimanded, despite the military’s "don't ask, don't tell" policy on homosexuality.

...

Manzella, a medic who served in Iraq for a year, currently serves as medical liaison for the 1st Cavalry Division stationed in Kuwait, where he says he is "out" to his entire chain of command, including a three-star general. After leaving Iraq, he started receiving anonymous emails warning him about his openness that suggested he was being watched, so he went to his commander to head off an investigation he felt was coming. "I didn’t know how else to do it," he tells Stahl, acknowledging that he initiated an investigation of himself by violating the policy. "I felt more comfortable being the one to say, 'This is what is real,'" Manzella says.

He then says his commander reported him, as he was obliged to do, and then "I had to go see my battalion commander, who read me my rights," he says. He turned over pictures of him and his boyfriend, including video of a passionate kiss, to aid the investigation. But to his surprise, "I was told to go back to work. There was no evidence of homosexuality," says Manzella. "'You’re not gay,'" he says his superiors told him. This response confused him and, he says, the closest a superior officer came to addressing his sexuality was to say "I don't care if you're gay or not."

...

"They don’t care….these are our peers…the 'Will and Grace' generation," says Brian Fricke, referring to the popular television program featuring a gay character. Fricke was a Marine Corps avionics technician who served in Iraq. "They grew up with it in the media….They see gay people as people…Americans," says Fricke. "They don't see gay people as people with a disability…."

The basic question that nobody will ask is: Would you rather have a gay soldier that is the best at the job or would you rather have a hetero person that sucks at the job. No pun intended. Having had to work a lot harder to make up for the second case, I can tell you that I personally don't give a tinker's dam about a person's sexuality--if they do the job (and that does include how they handle their sexuality) live will be better for everyone. The bigger problem is heteros raping the opposite sex. Get that under control first and the military will be a place that I will actually encourage my daughter to join.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

That would be no better than if I found a fellow soldier raping another fellow soldier.

I doubt that the scenario you throw out there will happen anywhere except in ....prison??

As an example of how bad hetero behavior is worse...I personally worked in a building next door to a TSgt/MSgt who...hit on my female airman. Hit on a SSgt's wife in my shop. Was found in the women's shower tent in Saudi. Those are the things I know for a fact. He was..and is...a self serving jackass. But...he was somebody's golden boy and was sheltered from any punishment. There is no one from his shop in the military now (7 years later) and his shop was staffed with over 50% junior nco's and airmen. Your tax dollars at work. On the other hand, I had a female airman in my shop and I wrote her annual report. Outstanding airman, outstanding technician. Three years after she left my shop, I was told she was separating from the service. Why? she was outed by someone who was jealous that she was getting awards for her efforts as a technician. Super. I don't believe that your sexual preference matters........UNLESS it detracts from the unit's ability to get the job done. I will guarantee that the above MSgt did more to hurt his unit's effectiveness than twenty homosexuals (or more) ever could.

Your scenario detracts form unit cohesion and effectiveness--just like someone raping a fellow soldier (male or female doesn't even enter into the equation). BUT, for some reason, the military turns its head to male on female rape and then crucifies gays who are doing a very good job. During my tech school, I met a beautiful young girl. We talked and she was just a nice person. One day she told me she was separating...why? You know the answer..a TSgt had knocked her up. He stayed--even though it is against the UCMJ to do what he did. She left, career ruined. They finally had to actually make the student area of the base off limits--things like colonels cruising for airmen for his "parties" and other officers doing the same. And let's not forget that NCO again.

Yep, them gays are tearing the military apart. BS The heteros are tearing it apart!

Evdogg's scenario implies mutual consent, whereas rape is hardly consensual.

I fail to see how it's the same thing, or how the latter is "better" than the former.
