To a degree, but there is a lot less security in the baggage claim, and at some airports there is not any security (it allows persons from the outside unscreened to get in). While a person could theoretically walk into an airport with a gun and have 'fun times', the lack of security in this area allows for a person to pick a large number of people off fairly quickly before any security could stop them. Components can be left or smuggled into those back bathrooms and easily reassembled with components being brought into checked baggage. I know you might not see a potential problem, because it's the right to carry issue. But it is a vulnerability. People aren't always going to attack us with bombs... they are going to look for easy ways to do quick damage in the most strangest (as this seems) of ways.

I didn't say I did not see a problem, I said I saw no difference in having one in your bag in baggage area, and being able to walk into Baggage with one thru the front door.

I dont support open carry and I am ok with restricting guns in Airports, if armed security is present

Most US airports I've been to have pretty lax security near baggage claim, especially if there are no international flights going through. Sometimes there can be screening near the entrance to the departure/arrivals areas, but baggage claim tends to be on the ground floor with easy access to foot traffic/cars.

Really sad and disturbing. Maybe after this incident airports will start upping security in those areas, but if he assembled in the restroom I mean...are they going to put walk-through metal detectors with guards at restroom entrances now?

Apparently NB, carrying a weapon at an airport terminal is not allowed (not sure if it's a state by state specific rule or not) but a Florida lawmaker wanted to change that recently. I think that this event will probably change security measures at baggage claims for the future. A lot of people would say their right to carry anywhere, even on a plane should not be infringed. But I think we're often so concerned with looking for very specific things via screening measures we're not thinking of the obvious..

Hearing a lot of disturbing stuff floating around about his prior activities.. not confirmed yet though, and that the FBI should have at least taken note of him in the past for making alarming crazy person terrorist statements. http://www.ibtimes.com/who-esteban-santiago-fort-lauderdale-airport-shooter-identified-after-killing-5-2471244

Seriously. Why does it seem like the FBI is continually brushing off people like this guy instead of taking some kind of action? Especially if he had a military background, as we've seen that before in these mass shootings as well.

I have asked myself that question. I believe in the other cases the FBI just has so many suspects, and they bring some in and question them.  But in our current climate and under the Obama policy of protecting Muslims, it is frowned upon by the current administration.  It would be seen as being racist.

In this persons case, It's an open and shut case on revoking his carry license in my books.  The FBI dropped the ball big time if what has been reported is the truth.  Which from the limited reports I have seen tend to confirm the guy was having mental issues.

I don't think he needs a license to carry a handgun in Alaska?  No restrictions, concealed or open.

Right now there seems to be no legal way for someone who is mentally disturbed but already has guns to lose them and maybe a formal legal process for that needs to be worked out.  I would not have a problem with a process like a criminal proceeding.

Court, judge, jury, the works but definitely take them away until after the trial if someone is showing signs of being mentally disturbed.

How did he manage to kill that many firing bullets that did not come from an assault style looking weapon?

He did 9 years in the guard and got discharged as a PFC. He should have made E-5 by accident at that point

The FBi is not ruling out that it was a Terrorist act... Ya think ?  Duh..

I have not followed it much, and I wasn't aware he was military or past military.  My initial reaction is homegrown terrorist.

You remember the Muslim dude at Fort Hood who killed 13 people, They tried to blame workplace violence for year, I think they have finally said it could of been terrorist.   With this administration, they do all they can to cover up ISIS inspired terrorist activities.

I would assume he went for head shots at point blank range (some videos you could clearly see shots to the back of the head and back) and emptied whatever was in the clip? Don't know how many bullets his gun held, but he was caught when he attempted to change clips.

He does seem to be past military, joined when very young and went to Iraq. His family noticed something was strange about him ever since his return, and he had been in and out of mental health treatment since then. Despite that he maintained having a gun, was in the guard (discharged for not good conduct or something?) and worked in security (despite having child porn and assault charges). I've heard some things about this guy floating around online, that implies his online activities were also pretty loony for someone wanting to sign up and go to Iraq, but I guess if you're hearing voices in your head anything is possible. To me of course this is a terrorist act, but it is one that is likely committed by an insane person that has been in the system for a while.

Agreed. But do they have actual legal authority to do that?
