A Number on NOA2 and Visa do not match

It was, and still is, my impression that retaining the services of a lawyer would not be necessary in this situation.

My comment was not intended to be construed as a stereotyping of lawyers. If you really want to see stereotyping of lawyers, use the forum Google search function, insert the word "lawyer," and check out the (likely) myriad of lawyer threads that can easily be found on these fora.

Heard back from the consulate in Canada, they will not assist and said they do not keep my file once the visa is issued. Told to go to USCIS.

So I am sending in my AOS as planned today and then will keep my info pass appointment for April 22. I don't want to wait because my unemployment insurance in Canada relies on sending in my AOS by April 13...

Thinking i may try calling USCIS again today though, can't hurt to try again. Wondering is there is a better question to ask that will force them to validate my A#?

Sounds like you got the old bureaucratic brush-off.

Try getting in touch with a Tier 2 rep at USCIS. The initial folks at the USCIS service line are not that useful. Maybe try verifying that your NOA2 A# is the number of record that they have on file? Then elaborate, as needed, after that??? If you are unsuccessful, an Infopass appointment may be your recourse.

Report back with (hopeful) progress.

Just add a paragraph with an explanation about it in your cover letter / AOS package. Use your NOA2 alien # in the application and add a photocopy of the previous in the visa.

Just had my infopass appointment yesterday. They told me that the typo is indeed on my actual visa and not the NOAs from USCIS. They told me that it can definitely cause me problems down the line because it is someone else's file number.

They then told me that there was nothing they could do to fix it because DOS made the mistake. They first told me to go to their office and eventually i ended up at US border patrol at the airport... They agreed they made the error, but said there was nothing they can do about it and after some arguement from me They settled to write a hand written note on the back of my i94 saying the number is wrong....

I don't know if this will cause problems again, since i am not sure this note really resolves anything, but figured i would let people know the outcome in case this happens to them.

On the bright side, i used the correct number on my AOS and already received NOA1. Now settling in for the long, long wait

Thanks for the update. This confirms what has been stated on VJ over the years, trust the number on the NOA2 approval notice over any other.

Absolutely it does. In this case anyways and probably most others. Unforunate that they won't actually fix the problem, but hopefully it will be fine and is noted in their systems.
