How long did it take to get your "green card" in the mail after arriving in the US?

We just spoke with an immigration officer at the Embassy. He said it could take up to 2 months to get my husband's permanent residency card after he enters the US. For those of you who have an IR/CR-1 visa, how long did it take for your green card to come in the mail?

Also, is it true that you can't travel out of the US until you receive the green card?

You can get it as early as 7 days. My friend got hers in 2 weeks from POE.

I believe they stamp your passport with an I-94 which proves you're a permanent resident and it's good for something up to a year or something like that. You can leave and enter on that until you receive your pink card, apparently.

03/23/2022: Application for passport submitted at USPS facility under standard processing.

04/04/2022: Status changed to “The U.S. Department of State has received your application for your passport book on 04/04/2022. We're now reviewing your application and supporting documents...Your application locator number is 51*******.”

04/04/2022: Check for passport cashed.

05/03/2022: Status changed to "The U.S. Department of State approved your application for your passport book. We're now printing your passport book and preparing to give it to you. You should receive your passport book on or around 05/09/2022."

05/05/2022: Passport Received.

05/09/2022: SSA Citizenship Status Updated.

05/25/2022: Naturalization Certificate received in mail.

I believe they stamp your passport with an I-94 which proves you're a permanent resident and it's good for something up to a year or something like that. You can leave and enter on that until you receive your pink card, apparently.

Not quite, CR-1 (and IR-1) visa holders will receive a standard entry stamp on the page of their passport next to the visa from CBP. The CBP officer will write in relevant information in the entry stamp fields. It is a combination of the entry stamp and the visa itself that acts as a temporary green card until the actual one arrive. The temporary green card is valid for travel (although other countries are not obligated to accept it as valid and can demand an actual green card).

What reason would another country have to see an actual green card?

Primarily if the passport of the green card holder had to apply for a visa for the country they wanted to visit in advance. To illustrate, a green card holder who holds a Mexico passport wants to travel to Russia. Since Russia requires Mexico passport holders to have a visa prior to arrival, the individual would have to apply for a visa from the appropriate diplomatic mission. In that application process, a Russian CO can demand to see the actual green card.

I just realized I said "pink card." lol. I've been working in insurance too long. I've got it on the brain.

I paid the $165 fee back in late June and haven't heard anything about my wife's green card. In fact I've been asked to pay the $165 fee twice. I sent them a letter explaining this to them but haven't heard a thing. Any idea of why it's taking too long?

It took about a month for my husband to get his Green card and we had to go to the local office and apply for his social security card. We waited 4 weeks then went and applied.


USCIS - 66 days ROC - 139 days from sent to approved
12/3/2012 - I-130 delivered to Chicago 5/20/15: mailed I-751 package to California office
12/4/2012 - NOA1 NBC (Missouri Service Center MSC) 5/22/15: Date on NOA1
12/6/2012 - Check cashed 8/26/15: Bio appointment

12/8/2012 - Received paper NOA1 10/06/15: Received Email card was being processed
12/20/2012 - Case number showed up on USCIS website
1/29/2013 - Called USCIS and case is still at NBC
2/8/2013 - Received an Email that we were approved on 2/7/13
3/5/2013 - Told file may have been "misplaced" to email NOA2 to NCVresearch
3/7/2013 - ISO at the USCIS opened a service request to try to track down
if and when the file was shipped. Should hear something before 3/26 ( so she said)

You can travel without the GREEN CARD by using your endorsed IMMIGRANT VISA foil as your temporary green card. It can be presented as your green card for a period of one year from the date of official entry as an immigrant endorsed by the ARRIVAL OVAL stamp adjacent to the IMMIGRANT VISA FOIL page on your passport,
