Let's say someone has a DR's appt in one hour, but would like to know what to do RIGHT now to lower blood sugar until the appt. A post like this could be useful. If anyone thinks someone is actually using VJ as their Dr, that's funny.

I'm sure WebMD or any other site like it could give better advice than those here.

From the OP:

He will have another doctor appointment next week.. is there any tips on how or what we can do to at least lower his sugar level the fastest way??Plssss any ideas i really need it.Thanks in advance..

Not that it matters if it was one week or one hour. If you need information on why liberals hate America or how conservatives have destroyed America, you have come to the right place. If you need medical advice ASAP, then the person you are seeking medical advice for really needs to get more competent help.

If I had a medical emergency, I'd call my doctor before I'd ever post a question on VJ. There may be some knowledgeable people on VJ, but that's no substitute for actual medical advice from a professional in the field.

Exercise is the greatest thing to lower BS, just a nice brisk walk, test after walking for at least 20 min see where you are at the beginning of your walk and at the end, if still high continue to walk for another 20 minutes, do this for a few days, if the BS doesn't decrease than call your doctor and explain the problem see if he will give something extra to pull it down.

I understand what you mean, but if after reading online medical sites you can actually ask around to people who might know about diabetes or have it themselves, it can also be helpful.

I am not using VJ for medical help..was hoping any simple ideas from fellow Vjer's would help. Anyway he's been taking Januvia not insulin yet. It runs in their family coz most of them have diabetis.

He is back now from eating no breads,, carbs.. sweets and his sugar level is going down gradually.

I really thank you all for the ideas that am sure would be a big help.

I am type 1 diabetic and very brittle. It sounds like your husband needs either his meds or his meals modified. Yes, he needs to look at his food as medicine now - diabetes is controlled by balancing the available insulin and the available glucose from foods eaten. Carbohydrates are in many foods you may think are healthy and mistakenly consume when you have diabetes, such as carrots or orange juice. These are simple carbohydrates and are turned into glucose quickly so raise blood sugars quickly. Complex carbohydrates such as beans or whole grains take longer to break down into glucose so don't have as quick an effect on blood sugar. Eating a protein or a fat with a carbohydrate also slows down the metabolism of the carbohydrate, thus moderating the speed on which glucose enters the blood stream. It is a constant balancing act. Exercise is useful in getting the body to use up the glucose that is in the blood, however, sometimes if your blood glucose is too high, exercise becomes a bad thing and can actually cause other issues of concern. The fastest way to lower high blood sugars is with insulin. That doesn't help if you aren't on insulin.

It sounds like both of you might benefit from a visit with a diabetes educator and dietitian so you will be able to understand how best to handle situations like this in the future. Many hospitals have classes available or your doctor may be able to direct you to one.

Then the intelligent thing to do would be let the doctor decide, wouldn't it?

Does he feel funny?/dizzy? give him insuline if you have any. Let him exercise. Monitor his sugar and if it doesn't go down head to the ER. 238 is high, but not too bad. I always found it worse when they are too low on sugar. Hope he feels better soon.

What if he's not on insulin? Very dangerous advice.
