When attempting to view the Popular Topics page using the Chrome browser I get all the headers but none of the content. Is there a plug-in that's needed or is it just a glitch when using Chrome?

Interesting! I use Rockmelt, a Chrome-based browser, and when I look at Popular Topics I only get lines, no words at all (I usually do View New Content, this is the first time I looked at it).

I think it's a chrome glitch. I have suffered at the hand of chrome also.

Its a user based kind of open source ware. You are supposed to report these glitches so they can fix it.

This is mostly for Captain Ewok or whoever maintains the code here:

According to my chrome javascript debugger, the problem is in the importXML function in "lastupdates.php" (near the top of the file, according to Chrome). Whoever wrote this code did not know or forgot that Chrome does not implement the load method on Document objects. It looks like XmlHttpRequests will be needed as an alternative to parse the XML contained in the xml file referenced at the end of that function. This appears to be a well-documented omission in Chrome. An example of parsing XML using XmlHttpRequests can be seen here, along with a try/catch block that will allow you to support all browsers. I normally would avoid treating a non-exceptional situation as an exception, such as the code I linked to, but perhaps this is the only way to properly address this in all browsers.

Note that this may be a Webkit issue, and not specifically a Chrome issue. If so, then this is an issue for Safari as well.

Once this is addressed, the popular topics page should work, assuming there isn't some other compatibility issue with Chrome in the code.

FYI I was able to see the content of the popular topics page in my javascript console in Chrome by executing the 4 lines in the last try block, replacing the file placeholder with results2.xml.

For some reason, I cannot perform in-place edits on the existing code in lastupdates.php using the Chrome debugger. It may have something to do with the extension of the file (php vs js).

When I execute the following code in the console, the contents that are supposed to appear in the popular topics table are echoed to the console:

var xmlhttp = new window.XMLHttpRequest();

xmlhttp.open("GET","results2.xml",false);

xmlhttp.send(null);

xmlDoc = xmlhttp.responseXML.documentElement;

You can see what I mean by typing the above commands on one line in a Chrome console and examining the output.

Presumably, to make this work with chrome/webkit, you would replace the call to xmlDoc.load(...) with the code above. However, this will not necessarily work in all browsers. Your options are to follow the code in the link I provided for cross-browser compatibility, or to make use of jQuery or Prototype, since these libraries take care of cross-browser compatibility for you. It looks like prototype.js is already imported by VJ.
