If your wife is there, then my guess is you have been there before. Your wife should be able to give you a better idea about the environment since that's her country. Have you asked her?

Yes, there are white people in Ciudad Juarez. I have been there, though I have to admit that it was a few years back (about 16 years ago). Yet, the racist tone of your post irks me, so do you think that the presence of other fellow white people will protect you from getting robbed or shot down by a criminal? No, not really. You should exercise caution and try to stay in your hotel (which should be within walking distance from the consulate) and do not be out too late or when it's dark. It would be best to be in and out of the city, do not roam the streets as the typical tourist taking pictures and looking naive. Avoid taking taxis, specially those which are unauthorized. Mind your surroundings and be careful not to dress too flashy or elegantly.

Best wishes!

It is not safe for ALL people regardless of race, creed or color. I am sure you have read about the crisis there and you should excercise great caution whenever you travel abroad. Check the travel advisory for Cuidad Juarez at the Official Embassy website. Good luck to youand your family!

Trumperfire, I have to admit, that I too took your post as somewhat racist. After taking a moment to reflect and reading your follow-up posts, I truly feel that you are scared. Fear is a good thing in the situation as it is now. Do not let your guard down, not even for a moment. While I don't feel that you would be targeted for being white, you are at the same risk as all of the residents and visitors to Ciudad Juarez. Think ahead before you do anything and consider consequences and alternatives. You are going to be there for one reason and one reason only. Do what you went to do and get out of there as soon as possible. Good luck with your interview and your future life together.

Completely agree all points Robert de Bonda.

Trumpettefire,

Just be careful and mindful of your surroundings. Unfortunately Cuidad Juarez has become one of the deadliest this side of the globe. I have those same concerns/worries and my Fiancee is from the state of Chihuahua. Not so far in the past there was an unfortunate incident where embassy personnel were targetted. Very sad to find that bad things happen. You could also read posts/reviews from that embassy where VJ members here have posted. What can I say other than I share the same concerns about visiting that area. I plan on being there for my Fiancee. I also appreciated your reply!

Again my best to you and your family!

Unfortunately the city is in total chaos. Try to stay as near the embassy as possible and at a full service hotel so room service is readily available. I am not sure about Mexico, but in Bogota the nicer motels only allow private taxis to pick-up from their facilities. (I have never personally felt endangered there but my wife (Colombian) is petrified there.) I actually like the comment about self-tanning and pepper spray. The key thing is don't stand out, don't be flashy and stay aware of your surroundings.

One more thing: Is your wife allowed entry into the US? If she is stay in El Paso.

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!
