I have no problem with the bank tellers, I find them very friendly and polite and I like it that way.
Been here for 14 months now and I have found a few alternatives to things I didn't like at first, I have grown accustomed to a lot of food which I couldn't stand at first. Finding fresh produce is still a problem, but I am looking forward to spring when farmer's market starts again every weekend.
High fructose corn syrup is my big complain, I find it very hard to find alternatives for this.
I wish things were much closer and public transportation was better for smaller cities. But overall I am well settled and being with a supportive spouse helps, when he take initiatives to make things easy for you and yes hear your ranting and venting everyday

and this you can't miss
happy valentine's day
-
Sending you positive vibes Star

I wear mine when I go out of the house, my husband wears his all the time. I am not a big jewelery person, so that's the reason why I don't wear it all the time.
-
Hmm I didn't even realize how close valentine's day is
. And to answer, No we won't celebrate, I am not that big on these special day festivities. I care about bdays and anniversaries, that's about it.

My husband is a WoW addict, enough said

Answering for my USC husband; he understands a few phrases here and there and can speak a few words. He did show some interest but after a while he kind of gave up, and its ok really. The only reason he wants to learn is to communicate with my grandma, hopefully he will catch up a bit on Hindi by his next trip to India.
About kids, we don't have any kids yet but whenever we do, I do plan to talk to them in either Hindi or Bengali, or may be both, most probably just one, but we do want our kids to know Indian heritage and follow some of the Indian cultures.

I am a busy bee these days, actually checking VJ after god knows how many days. Hopefully I will start driving classes by 1st or 2nd week of Feb, depending upon my work schedule.

Might sound weird but usually I sneeze 6-7 times in one cycle. My husband has stopped saying "bless you" anymore

Insurance pricing is a local thing. So you will need to get quotes from carriers/brokers to find the best value for you. A first time driver will be more expensive. If you have homeowners or renters insurance contact your agent for a quote. There are often discounts for having multiple policies.
If you have friends with cars you could ask them to let you drive them around on an afternoon or two to get more practice. It all comes down to confidence. The more that you drive, the better you should be.
Best of luck. Don't text and drive.
Thanks both britbird and Anh map. I am totally against of driving and cell phone, so that will not be an issue.
I don't really have any friends here, so don't really have any other way to get practiced unless its my own car. I never had to drive in India because cabs and buses are so cheap.
We do have rental insurance, I will have my husband give them a call and see how much they give as an estimate.

So after being in US for over 1 year, I think its high time to get myself a car. I wish to know a few things from other members.
--My husband doesn't drive(had an accident a few years ago and he just refuses to drive after that), so I will get the driving lessons from professional institute here in town. I have a very short time to practice, the 30 hour driving lesson (24 hour class, and 6 hour driving). I will not have any other time or way to practice other than the driving lessons I take in the class. Do you think it will be enough for a first timer to handle things and get a driving license?
--For a first couple of months I will try to drive inter city only, don't want to venture into highway. Home to work(8 minutes drive), home to grocery shopping(5 minutes drive), that's about it. I think that will build confidence more.
--How much should I expect as insurance fee to be? I know I can do a google search, but I don't want to get all those phone calls. Anyways I will be first time driver, I can't take the insurance on my husband because he doesn't have a DL, so it will be for me. I plan on getting a honda civic, don't know about the year, but most probably it will be under 3k.
--On a personal note, both USC and immigrants, how long did it take for you guys to get a hold of driving properly, it could be that you started driving as a teenager or could be someone like me who took up driving in their late 20s.
Thanks for all the help in this regard, if you have something more to give as input I would really appreciate it

Luis's English isn't that great, but I send him all over the place to get stuff for me
He has mastered the art of ordering coffee at Dunkin Donuts
Actually getting out there and talking to people is the only way he's going to learn. That and by going to English classes I guess. From what I've noticed, he's learned more about conversation by actually talking to others & the classes just help him with his writing & reading.
true that. It is important to go out and face the world. I go out all the time, my English is good, though I do have an accent but I haven't faced any problem because of that. If you won't interact with other people you will never learn. I had hard time understanding what others are talking, you know the southern slangs and ebonics mix, but I am getting there now, I do know when someone is b*tching about their baby daddy or whatever
Does your wife drive? I go by bus everywhere, I am sure she can make her way to walmart or any grocery stores, its not like someone can attack her there in middle of everyone around.

Joe said it first, I took a few days time, I was pretty nervous, shy and all those butterfly feelings

Start with the Guides in this website, you have to devote sometime to complete this process. If you have a simple case, like no over stay or any criminal record or things like that, then an attorney is not much of use. All an attorney will do in a simple case is post the forms to appropriate place; it will be your job anyways to provide with all the documents.
Do read this site, especially CR-1 forum and get a better idea before sending your petition.

the actor got cancer?
yeah I found out that she was his wife a few weeks ago.. I was a little surprised..
Michael C Hall is his real name, he has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma but it is curable.

Dexter got cancer
and I got to know that Debra Morgan is actually Dexter's wifey in real life.

My ex used to be like that... He never dared post stuff on FB because he knew that I'd hang him with his balls.. but he would continusely spam my email with lyrics of sappy songs. Imo, some people feel emotions more intensely than others do
I do enjoy a guy to be a bit sensitive but I love my space more! I just don't like to be smothered by anyone.

fb and dr phil just told me I'm self-centered and vain
he said the same thing about me
oh whatever as long as I can be a dominant tyrannic b*tch of a wife.

same here except we buy meat at walmart, sam's, or homeland.... i don't understand how locally owned asian stores are cheaper than walmart on produce & seafood...but they are.
Not just the vegetables or fish, but the most price disparity I find is with spices. Out here at walmart you will get a small bottle of bay leaves for around $8 but yesterday I bought a big bag of bay leaves from the Chinese store for $0.75
I don't know how they do their business, funny thing is not many white people of the town know about the place, its usually is filled with Asians.

I still don't think being a vegetarian is cheaper unless you are willing to eat the same boring food all the time. Since most people don't want to, you have to buy various things and figure out how to get full without just eating tons of carbs. And I think it would be cheaper for us if I could buy bulk chicken or something.
I would disagree, at least with Indian dishes I can alter things. You don't have to eat the same beans and rice everyday. There are types of vegetables and dishes -- bottle guard, jack fruit, stuffed parathas ( you can change stuffing according to your taste), chick peas salads, dosas, sambhar, puris, okra, green beans, types of lentils, again you can alter the tastes or add things to lentils according to your style, spinach with paneer, parwal, raw banana.
But I could understand your point since you said you don't have any Indian grocery near by, so most probably you won't find variety of vegetables like I find out here.
-
We don't have a local Indian grocer.
I'd have to drive to Tampa or Clearwater and the gas used would probably equal the cost of savings. We buy cheap rice at Walmart.
I know if you eat something really boring you can eat that cheap, if you have to. But not unless you HAVE to. LOL.
No Chinese grocery either? or Mexican? Of all the Chinese grocery I have seen both in this city and in Georgia, they do carry Indian stuff and most of the cheap vegetables. Mexican groceries out here carry all the vegetables too.

Wow 200/mo for even 2 ppl?
If you have done that, teach me your ways. I already am a big bargain shopper, I hate paying full price...so that amazes me.
I think it really depends upon where you live and how much meat or veggies cost in your area. My monthly food shopping goes for around $350 for 2 people, it could be far less if we were vegetarians or even if we both were eating the same kind of food. My husband lives on red meat while I am more of veggie and fish person. The only common thing we eat would be chicken. So I do need my share of shrimps and Indian veggies almost every day.
Vegetable at the Asian grocery store out here is far cheaper than Walmart, same with the fish. But for meat I do shop at either Walmart or shnucks.
