wizardfitz,
I don't get the "trouble" part from the family back home? Being an Asian myself I do understand how close knit families are and the expectations from the child. I would say financially I never had to give a dime of what I earned back in India, but I know there are these norms I had to follow after I got my first salary, like giving sweets or some kind of gift to everyone.
I don't want to judge because everyones situation is different but it does make one think why a family would need $500 or so per month, or why the American husband needs to help everyone in the family, I can understand ailing FIL or MIL but nephews, neices? Isn't it a bit too much.
To the OP-- does your wife know exactly how much you earn and what all the bills you pay? Does she go for grocery shopping alone, where she would know first hand how much her budget is how much she can spend on certain things?
I don't know your situation but reading a lot of similar posts about money matter out here it seems like the young bride lives in oblivion, she has no clue about bank account, budgeting, where and how money is going and seems more and more like the bread winner husband is there to take care of all her needs.
I hope you would sit down with your wife and show her the bills, let her plan at least one month's shopping and other bills, let her know first hand where and how money is being handled. It is a learning and adjusting process and she has to act as a partner not a pampered lil princess.

banks will report 10,001 to irs for money movement. that is per day on a account. if you do 800 a day over the course of a month, you should be good. you pay taxes on income not on moeny you already have. so taxes you will report to gov't is on returns on investments on this money.
no i am not cpa but i am in business and have many tranactions a year that i deposit 10,000 into business account.
so good luck and i would suggest do it over course of 6 months or something like that
Be careful with this kind of advice. Yes, the IRS automatically flags transfers of 10,000 or more, but that doesn't mean they don't flag lesser amounts or any other kind of pattern either randomly or routinely. If you're doing this to evade declaring this money as income, you could be setting yourself up for a nasty fall. Honestly, I have a pretty hard time believing a transfer of $800 per day over the course of a month would not be flagged.
I do plan to declare it when we file tax return February 2010. I will have to because we are planning to use this money and plus the money my husband has saved so far to buy one of the cheap foreclosed homes.
What I want to know is-- Do I have to declare it right away or I can do it when me and husband go for filling the tax return once he gets his w-2?

YAY for India and Egypt!!!
Shukriya everyone for the sweet words about Egypt!
Sachinky, you guys have great wedding pics!!
I had a long day of work today and have a long day of work ahead of me tomorrow, no weekend for me this week since I had days off for my interview last Sunday... I can't wait for the next weekend!
I've been listening to Latika's theme of Slumdog Millionaire last night... It's so beautiful!!! Anyone has an idea who composed it? What the name Latika means?
I think A.R Rehman composed it along with all the other songs of the movie. Latika means a plant or a vine to be specific.

Had a busy but good day so far. A friend came by and gave me a batch of Christmas cookies. Tomorrow is Joe's birthday, he kept repeating that he doesn't want anything for his birthday, but well me being the good wife and all
I went ahead and got an ipod for him, he might freak out, but I don't care
.
Also got some nice wine, hope to have a wonderful day tomorrow.

I incorporate both Indian and American cooking. My white husband loves his meat and potato, one should see his face if I give him just vegetarian food for one day, he will have his puppy eyes ready asking-- what no meat?
He loves Indian food but he won't be able to eat it every day. These days I am trying to cook a lot of Mediterranean food. I do hate that I make 2 sets of meal everyday. Joe and me just don't eat the same thing, I don't enjoy red meat except lamb, and he hates lamb and loves other red meat; he won't eat fish, I love fish. He isn't a big fan of rotis or parathas. He loves masala dosa though, and I incorporate Indian veggies in his meals. He is a big fan of sweets; kalakand, soan papdi(store bought), kheer........those are usually gone within hours of making.
About Hindi, he loves all the Lata Mangeshkar songs and he knows a couple of words here and there. It's funny now he knows a lot of Sanskrit mantras/shlokas by heart but won't learn Hindi. I think I should push him more into learning Hindi
Hey Moksha, answered your question about money transferring.

Hi Trinket...
can I ask what kind of account are you using? My in-laws are in India and my husband and I have been trying to figure out an account that would let us either deposit money here in the States that my In-Law's could withdraw or have them deposit money there that we could withdraw. We haven't been able to figure out exactly what kind of account we need??? Any advice you could give would be appreciated because it sounds like you're kind of doing what we want to be able to do.
Thanks!
~Jen
Hi Moksha,
I have a checking account with Axis bank in India, before leaving I made it as a joint account with my dad, so he can access it any time. I kept the Visa international debit card they provide, so once in a while my dad deposit some money for gifts and things like that and I withdraw it from any atm here in US.
I am not really sure about sending money from US easily, I have sent some pocket money to my brother a couple of times and I have sent that through western union.
I would think you can do the same for your inlaws too, have a bank account in US and send them the international ATM card, so they can withdraw whenever they want to.

Amby is on her way home. She is drugged out of her mind and has a black eye

I'm new to this, but have lurking around this forum for a while... I just wanted to say I've always been fascinated by the Indian culture! I read for authors books and listen to Indian Music although I don't usually understand a word!
.. I've always wanted a Saree and finally got one last month! LOL (I didn't know they are that hard to wear though
) Anyway, you guys who are Indian or have been to India, you are lucky! It's really a dream of mine to go to India one day!
Much love from Egypt!
Aya
And my dream destination is Egypt. I swear, I have always wanted to go to Egypt, since I guess I was 3 or so. And some day I will.
You know its funny, but me and husband bumped into each other on yahoo chat room because I had an Egyptian id, (tutenkhamen_pb).........so you know how much fascinated I am. May be we should trade our next plane ticket
Tutenkhamun here I come

trinket, do you know how to make bhatura? my husband said he could make it, but i never tasted his cooking, lol.
I don't, I do make good puri and all but I actually stay away from deep fried cooking, I am allergic to the smell, its confusing, my husband and bro says I got a lot of issues
which I do. Basically I get sick when I am near some deep fried or any greasy food stuff, I don't have to eat it, just the look and smell makes me sick.
Now if you ask how I maintain my fattening waistline.....its the sweets that do it
Anyways, here is a video you might want to watch and try to make your own.

Ok, so my I-864, I'll have it completed today. IRS Transcripts, had those since I filed.
PCC, she does'nt have it yet, but I would imagine she can get it soon, I hope.
Bonafides, ready.
Thanks for your input everyone.
So, if it's only a month, we'd rather save the $1000.00 + and take a little get away when she comes here.
good choice

I miss some good fish and chicken which doesn't smell. Hate hate hate frozen meats out here

I did talk about bank wiring with my dad, but he won't be able to do it because to transfer that much of money one needs to have tax id number in India, which my dad doesn't and most probably he will never have. So I am stuck with withdrawing the limited amount a day.
But still the question is do I have to declare this amount to IRS?
Oh and per transfer fee is around $4 per transaction, I have did it earlier this September when my dad sent me some money for our own Hindu festive season

I had a couple of fixed deposits back in India, I think the term for fixed deposit is Certificates out here in USA. Anyways they have matured and my dad decided to put that money in my bank account in India. The money is roughly around $12,000.
I do carry the atm card of that Indian bank account and I was hoping to withdraw the amount(little bit at a time, around $800 per day is the limit of withdrawing) and put it in my bank account here in US. Do I have to declare the money or pay taxes on it?

Best wishes for the interview.

Sara,
With Administration processing, they are doing his background check. I don't want to offend or anything but I really feel him being from Kashmir + being Muslim and a Doctor is the cause of additional background check.
If you remember a couple of years ago there was a bombing case involving Indian doctor's in England and also one of the doctor was detained in Australia (though he was freed later on). But anyways consulates these days do scrutinize more and more if the beneficiary belongs to technical fields.
Hope this won't be another long wait
Best wishes
-
If you have everything ready, all the PCC, tax information, i-864 then its a matter of weeks only. It surely is better to go with CR-1 on long run. Indian consulates are good with giving interview dates. It will also depend upon when your case gets completed at NVC. Say your gets completed at around 18th of the Dec, then most probably you will get an interview date of February which will be assigned to you in January.

Notice of Intent to Marry is for K1 (fiancee visa), not K3. You are already married
If you cannot find the vaccination records, she will need to get them done again (well, those age and gender appropriate for her); it could cost quiyte a bit but should not add any time to the proccess if you start getting them soon. I am not familiar with India, but maybe your wife can check with the doctor who looked after her in childhood and/ or the local health department if they have a record?
In India its not a problem even if you don't have vaccination records. When she goes for her medical they will take a blood test and will determine which vaccines are needed according to her age and the test result.
