sara..... reacted to Penguin_ie in New General Forums Mod- welcome GandD!
It is my pleasure to introduce GandD as Visajourney's newest moderator.
GandD has been an active member of Visajourney for two years, and especially level headed posting in the CEHST forum. In response to member feedback about the General Discussion forums, and especially the very busy and somewhat "different than the others" CEHST forum, he was appointed to help moderate this area. It is important to Visajourney and the moderating team that all members feel welcome here, and that we listen to your concerns and suggestions. We may not always agree, but in this case, the appointment of a specific moderator with experience in this area, known to the "locals" so to speak, and familiar with the culture of the CEHST and other General Discussion forums, was agreed by all to be a good idea.
Please be gentle on GandD in his first few weeks here as he settles in!

Cary is worth listening to, si man.
Another phenomenon: Mrs. T-B. had been to the U.S. before. Once here "permanently," she was as homesick as she could be at first. Shortly after she got here, her closest sister nearly died while giving birth, and Mrs. T-B. was inconsolable about not being there for her. We hadn't adjusted status or gotten the AP document yet, so she was stuck. Those were tough days for both of us.
After recovering from that and slowly becoming more acclimated, Mrs. T-B. was wild about the idea of going back to Ecuador to visit. Almost as soon as she got the AP paper, she had me arrange a 7-week trip for her, and I was to join her for the last 9 days or so. This was in earlier 2009. About 3 weeks in, she called me and plaintively said, "I want to come home." I asked why, and she said, "It's not the same." She gutted out the trip as originally planned.
We talked later. She'd found that her friends and even some of her family had begun moving on with their lives. In addition, she wasn't prepared to re-adapt to the less-than-First-World conditions in Ecu. When I inquired about this phenomenon, she said, "It's like staying in a cheap hotel -- it's OK, if it's all that you know. Once you've stayed at a better hotel [meaning the U.S.], you see the difference, and you can't put up with it as well."
In later 2010, we visited Ecu again. Mrs. T-B. joined a caucus of her high-school classmates. Some were never-married, some were divorced, and some were unhappily married to machistas. We were all sitting at an outdoor cafe, where Mrs. T-B. was regaling her amigas with tales of her life in the U.S. I can't understand much Spanish, so I contented myself with drinking Inca Kolas and observing.
I gathered that Mrs. T-B. was talking about how little cooking she had to do for me, and how undemanding I was. One of her girlfriends exclaimed "Oh, my God" in Spanish. (Note for others: "Macho" husbands in Ecu and elsewhere in Latin America can insist on 3 freshly cooked full meals every day, and leftovers are unacceptable. This is only a fraction of what wives there can suffer through.) I mustered my entire Spanish vocabulary and managed to say that when I came home from work, I would ask "Where's dinner?" and Mrs. T-B. would say "Silencio! Mi novela!" ["Shut up! My Spanish soap opera!"] The girls got a kick out of that, and I think that Mrs. T-B. appreciated my support of her points.
Earlier this year, Mrs. T-B. went to Ecu with 3-year-old Mini-Bone for 3.5 weeks (I couldn't come along or join them later). Almost from the start, she was calling me daily or more often, expressing anguish at the conditions. She was sometimes nearly in tears. Little Mini-B. had a hard time of his own. I told her to gut it out, which she did. When she came back, she had positively readjusted her appreciation of what she had here. And, it was fun to see Mini-B. delightedly reacquainting himself with all of his toys.
Edit: One early thing that I did really paid off. On Mrs. T-B.'s very second Sunday here, I dropped her at a Spanish-language church service and picked her up when it was supposed to let out. She emerged bubbling, and introduced me to some people whom she'd met. I took her back there a couple more times until she'd recruited a nice network of acquaintances.
Of note, none of those direct contacts endured, but she made connections through those people, and I think that a few of her current friends evolved "many times removed" from those first days.
If your wife returns, and if you have a similar church opportunity within range, consider dropping her there. You know up-front that the attendees will not be shady people. Mrs. T-B. isn't religious, and that wasn't the point, anyway. The social element was the chief thing, and it was a highly successful venture.

Why do you think I carry myself in the manner I do? I can't use slang, even when I'm off work because all it takes is one instance, next thing you know I'm Marvin the thug. I can't dress too casually or folks will think I'm lazy. I can't get too ignorant on this site, lest I be labeled an angry black man. You should hear the rules law abiding black people have to live by. We have to do everything better than you just to be considered almost just as good. I've seen white people get loud and rude, folks try real hard to calm them down. Black people? The cops get called at the slightest raise in voice.
And it's hard to move forward when being black can still get you killed by the police, another black person, or some guy who felt threatened, but confronted you first with a gun when you're unarmed.

One can deny that. I'm denying that. It's not MOST of the time.
Show me another country on the planet where a whole group of people is held hostage with the full support of the U.S. govt. Not only that, show me another country who is slowing annexing land that doesn't belong to them, while the U.S. govt. rewards them with billions in aid. Try to think in the present instead of citing some reference from the 1800s.

I disagree. The carnage and killing we see today has very little to with religion. It has to do with the selfish actions of a very small percentage of the world's humans population. Oh yes, people have always used religion to justify their actions. But it is always a distortion of what the religion actually teaches. Not one of the "Big 3" you mentioned really and truly teach people to destroy others. Extremist in all religions have interpreted the various scripture and texts to mean what they want it to mean. But the religions themselves actually teach quite the opposite.
I'm sure it makes one feel quite superior to call God a "fairytale" - but in reality, the notion of "God" has actually been a driving force for more good in the world, than evil. But if you rely in the internet for your info, of course you will get the most salacious and notorious descriptions of human behavior associated with religion. But again, it is a distorted perception of religion.
We are not a sad race. The news paints a sad story, but if you actually leave the wonderful worldwide web and travel in the real world, and see the human race in action, I think you would be shocked at how many people are leaving good and happy peaceful lives. Even though the news tells us otherwise, the reality is, there is much more goodness in the world...and much of it is because of the billions of good people who believe that wacky fairytale about God, and are striving for goodness that religion teaches.
    Peace

Jews are hated for two reasons. (Very abridged version. You can get the full version online. There are texts from a myriad of sources.)
Muslims have a beef with Jews for when Muhammed was spreading the word of Islam he was betrayed by the jewish tribes of Medina, with whom he had a covenant of peace and mutual protection.
Christians have a been with Jews because they claim jews killed their prophet but ultimately because when christianity took over pagan Europe it wanted to competition, so it too persecuted the jews as 'Jesus' killers'.
Muslims have a beef with christians becaue of the carnage perpetrated by the crusaders during their invasion of Jerusalem, one of the sacred cities in Islam.
The hypocrisy is that all this killing and all this carnage we see today is because all three religions, that worship the one and very same god, can't agree on which one follows god's commandments the best. We live in a planet where the exsitence of our species is based on disagreement over how a fairy tale is told and interpreted. We are a sad, sad race.

Settlements were built outside of Israeli borders LONG before Hamas. Camps were established LONG before Hamas. Gaza was under blockade LONG before Hamas. Israeli soldiers were walking the streets of territory that does not belong to Israel and shooting protesters LONG before Hamas.
Apply your logic to yourself and you will see it is flawed. You wouldn't take it sitting down, I wouldn't take it sitting down, and those people are not taking it siting down either. Israel needs to get out of areas that are not within their recognized borders.

I lived in Pakistan...........saw what she was talking about I listened thinking ok someone is going to do something until he said this sounds Islamic .......and until she said no Muslim or their family is in that position........Islam has not one thing to do with this other than people that are doing it happen to be Muslim.......this is the case of the haves and the haves not........anytime anyone no matter the religion gets into debt with one of these people their families for generations are held and worked ......its sickening really......one women i spoke to stated she prayed for all boys until she found that one of her sons had been used in the same manor as the girls........does that have anything to do with Islam no it does not......it has to do with ruthless lawless crewel people that take advantage of poor people to advance their income from the farms or the brick factories for little or no money going out

Im young compared to most on here so this will sound strange but i think its all the stupid games out there that kids are playing that have a lot to do with whats going on.........before our parents put a gun in any of our hands when we were hunting elk or deer we were told look at what one small bullet did a gun is not a toy and you cant get a do over at the destruction it did...we had already been taught to respect a gun at all times another words dont point at a person blah blah blah but looking at the destruction of what was just moments before a living breathing animal really brought home what could happen to a human.
one of my elder sisters used the game system as a baby sitter for her kids when they were young her boy has a hard time with real life he is a hero on the game and very shy and with drawn in real life that scares me.........i know the games have warnings on them of the age bracket they are trying to target but parents purchase them for their kids anyway.
maybe we will never know the real reason why people just go out and commit murder......just thinking about why they would do something like that frustrates me
