I know that when people make the decision to be together and file their application, the thought of them having a hard time adjusting is not even a possibility. On top of that, add the cultural adjustment AND life together as husband and wife, which is not as romantic as people think it should be.
I firmly believe that it has a lot to do with how both people involved look at the situation. One, he has to put more effort. That nonsense about not wanting to work at McDonald's because it's beneath him does not apply here in the US. One because the economy does not give us the luxury to be so picky and two because he needs to stay busy and not complaint about it. Good thing he found a job though.
Secondly, you also have to help him out. I hope you don't take this the wrong way but from the moment you filed that application for his visa you had to think about all the sacrifices you had to do for him, or it doesn't work. That includes supporting him emotionally and financially, helping him adapt to a new culture, helping him adapt to a new life in a new country away from his family and friends and that means not holding on so tightly to your own friends. This relationship is different from all others because when they get here, they're just like a brand new baby. You have to show them the way and help them figure things out until they adjust. At the same time they have to help themselves. It's a team effort.
I was there, trust me, but we BOTH pitched in and we're in a much better place now. So it's not just him, it's also you.
    Good luck!

    Carolina,

    ¡Buen Provecho!

Mononoke28 got a reaction from Harpa Timsah in Can my husband enter the US as a Student then AOS to Spousal Visa? We are already Married
Yes, he can enter the US with either a student visa or under the Visa Waiver Program and then change his status by filing for AOS. BUT, keep in mind that planning to do this before he enters the US is considered fraud because his intentions are not to come and just visit or study but to remain in the US permanently. If Immigration sees it this way, they will consider it fraud and your case will be denied.

I really don't understand why people give the K3 so much credit. If you really look at it in detail, almost anyone who had their petition approved by the USCIS in late June and followed the NVC shortcuts, or not, would've gotten a late August, early September interview. People tend to ignore the fact that by paying all NVC bills online and printing out the worksheets directly from their site, you fly through the process like nobody's business and end having an interview pretty much as if you had filed for a K3. And I'm not exaggerating.

Since you entered the US with a K1 visa, you didn't need to file an I-130 which is only used to Adjust Status from a non-immigrant visa (ex. tourist, student, work) to permanent residency. Definitely make an Infopass appointment with your local Immigration office to clear things up.

He's been brainwashed like nobody's business. Of course he's going to say he's happy there, it's obvious that the Cuban government took care of him and his family, so he's never had to suffer like most Cubans do. I mean, he's dad worked at a restaurant and after the kid arrives in Cuba he's elected into parliament?? There's a reason why he's mother chose to try to get to the US and died while pursuing this dream. I'm sure that if he had had to go back to what they were going through before they left, he'd be crossing that ocean again just like his mother did 10 ago.

Mononoke28 got a reaction from VanessaTony in Married on a B2 Visa
If she's going back to her home country she needs to do it before her return date. If you decide to change her status from her B1 visa to permanent residency, you will need to send all forms and she cannot leave the country or she won't be approved. Another, less expensive option would be for you to file the I-130 now so she can interview for her CR1/IR1 visa in her home country and come back using that visa. She will have to go back before September though or she will be penalized for her B1 visa overstay. But this way she'll be able to return, take care of business there and then come back.
Depending on where you live and the US Embassy in her home country, the process can take anywhere from 6-12 months, and you don't have to file after she leaves, you can do it now if you want.

    Hola Azucena,

Mononoke28 got a reaction from Brother Hesekiel in Now that he's here does he need to carry around papers?
I've posted this before but when I was a permanent resident I chose not to carry my green card with me, in fact, the only two people in my family who chose to carry theirs were my sisters. My older (half) sister got her purse stolen at a large casino in Vegas and needless to say, never found it so she had to file to replace her green card. My younger sister lost hers when her purse was stolen when they broke into her car and had to go through the same thing. My husband never carries his and has memorized his A# just in case but there's no way we're going to pay $370 to replace his card if his gets lost or stolen.

Mononoke28 got a reaction from NArocks in Bogota Visa Interview Timetable Questions
It is recommended that the medical and lab exams be done a couple of days before the interview just in case. In case of what? The doctor having an emergency and not be able to do her exam, her lab tests getting lost, a missing document, a missing vaccine, you name it. If they get this done 2 days before the interview and something happens, they still have 1 more day to take care of whatever issue they may have before the interview.
The visas are delivered by DOMESA and they can pick them up at their office as soon as they're ready to be picked up which in Bogotá can be between 2-3 business days. If she chooses to have them delivered it may take 2-3 business if the address is in Bogotá or 6-10 business days if it's outside of Bogotá, in her case, Cali.
As far as lodging, we stayed at www.welovebogota.com, it was highly recommended by other VJ members and we really liked it. It's within walking distance from the embassy, in a very good neighborhood and the apartment itself was pretty nice and inexpensive.
When you go for the interview you need to get in line 3 which is for Immigrant visas and it doesn't matter if you show up earlier than everybody else or if you're a US citizen, they randomly call people for their interview in no particular order. Also, if you plan to attend, make sure you bring in your US passport with you so they can let you in. Your fiancée's son can also attend the interview.

Try applying for a Capital One Standard Platinum Credit Card, that's the one my husband applied for when he first arrived and he now has a credit score of over 750. We use it to buy groceries and gas and pay it off each month. It was a huge help when it came time to file for a mortgage, so it's a great way to establish your own credit.
I added him to my own credit cards and that didn't help at all, I was later told that he needed to establish his credit on his own and after applying for 4 different credit cards, Capital One was the one who approved him. The card does not have an annual fee and is designed for people with limited credit, such as students, new immigrants, or for people who want to re-establish their credit.
