I can tell you what our recent experience was like with SSN in CA (not LA though)

PoE was March 1st, Friday evening, printed out I-94 from PoE at home, went to SSA office at the open time Monday, March 4th. Please note: Not all SSA office created equal, some do not process SSN card applications, make sure the one you go to processes them. Use https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/ic001.action#officeResults and select "I need card services" to find closest office.

At SSA office we filled out a single one page form.

https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf You can download, print it, and fill it before at home as well if you so choose.

This form has one tricky question: Question 5: Citizenship: For K-1 holders answer is Legal Alien Allowed to Work. https://www.ssa.gov/people/immigrants/visa.html

Make sure to put names of your parents before Marriage. You should not need Birthday certificate. The worker refused to look at I-94 saying "I only need visa in your passport" I feel that was a mistake on his part, which might've contributed to delay.

After you are done at the SSA office, you can go to https://save.uscis.gov/casecheck/ and see if you can check the status of case verification with SAVE database. Your SSN will not be issued until this clears, but website doesn't show you the result of the check, just if they are still working on it, or if they are processing it.

We didn't get our SSN in the mail until April 5, 2019. The date on the card says March 29, 2019. So in effect it took nearly 5 weeks to get the card.

Hope you will have better luck. I would absolutely advise you to try to get it as soon as possible.

Thank you so much for this response! I appreciate you taking the time. I have saved what you sayid, and I will def make an appointment as soon as possible! :)

Go the minute you land. I came thru LAX with my fiancee in November. Either print your I94 at the airport if you have lounge access, or there is a Staples office supplies 1 mile from LAX in the near vicinity of the In-N-Out burger. So maybe the double double burger animal style first, then print I94 at the Staples print and copy center, you can have the SS card application filled out before you land ( Print it out online) , then the closest SS office is posted below. If you land at night, first thing the next day. If they give you an issue that your not in the system because they will see you just arrived, calmly but firmly ask them to please check. You will more than likely be in the system. My fiancee at the time was in the system the next day( less than 18 hours after coming thru POE) had card in 2 weeks. Went to DMV day after receiving SS card with her card, passport, translated birth certificate just in case, and had no problem getting a state ID card, wouldn't worry about a license right away, but you want to get in the system so when you go to get your license it makes things much easier. It will also make opening bank accounts and doing just about anything here once you have the state ID. My wife was a witness to a crime here in Vegas ( big surprise). And was able to show her ID to police for identification. Nothing has come of it so far, but was good she had it.

Thank you for your detailed reply! It is highly appreciated :)

Let me clarify:  I would certainly get a SSN as soon as possible... Opening a bank account, renting an apartment, and other things are much easier........and there is no reason to wait the full 2 weeks as indicated in the VJ guide.  Back, before electronic I-94s, etc., it was better to wait....but not now...

Thank you! I appreciate it :) So as soon as the I-94 is available I can just go and apply for the SSN? Do you know when it is available?

You did not ask a question regarding what I am writing about next. The members response to you is probably with the following spirit I can relate to after going through the K-visa process.

With a K-visa, yes you can get Social Security card relatively quickly, however,  since you are probably a very active person, you are probably not going to like the following aspects of the K-visa path.

You won't be able to get a State ID/Driver's License and/or work legally until 3-4 months after your I-485 gets filed with work document requested, which is filed after you get married.

I went through this very difficult time and it really can test one's patience when I have been driving all of my adult life.  Imagine ... you want to plan for a wedding and you can't drive legally.  So I used Uber/Lyft a lot and did a lot of things like a tourist and took English classes ... free ones for immigrants at a local college and met a lot of friends that way.

Congratulations on your visa and hang in there with the K-visa difficulties to having a normal life until after you get your work document.

I am well aware of all of this. I wrote this post asking about SSN. Thank you for taking the time to write tho.

You'll need your valid i94,usually you can get it updated 1 week after you arrive in the USA. Not sure if you'll get married soon or not,if you'd change your name after the wedding ,then you need to wait till you've gotten the Marriage record .It's convenient to go on the website of your local social security office ,fill out the form, print it out ,bring it with your valid i94 , passport ,marriage certificate then it'll be done soon.Your social security number card will be mailed to you in 2 to 4 weeks.

Ok, thank you so much for your reply :)

What is a couple of days in your immigration journey?  Take some time to unpack, meet your neighbors (get their phone numbers!), have a special dinner, take a bubble bath, go to the zoo, ...  The SSN will get done soon enough.

Either answer the question I asked or dont say anything at all. Im pretty sure I will be able to do more than one thing in a day ;)

  7. Hi everyone!

I know this has been asked a million times, but I still cant seem to understand - since many are saying different things. I just got my visa approved and received it this week. Yaay! I will be moving to Los Angeles in June, and was wondering if I can go straight away to apply for SSN, like the day after I arrive? Some people say that is ok, others say you have to wait two weeks. I just wanted to know if anyone had any experiences regarding this. Thank you all! :)

Tbh I don't think you can fill out an address in a completely different country. Where do you have your interview? If you have your interview in Norway you should put your Norway address on the DS-160. They prob won't send anything international. They might ask about it, but that's more to make sure they have the right address. People move, everyone understands that so that's nothing to worry about.

Norway does not do K1 visas so I have to go to Sweden. My boyfriend did updated my address with USICS in August, but I couldnt seem to see that on the "approved I-129F" that we got with the checklist. I will just fill in my Norwegian one, and if they ask I will just tell them :) Thank you for your help!

  9. Hey everyone!

I am currently filling out the DS160, and it asks for my address information. I lived in Oxford, England when we started the petition, but has since moved back to Norway. Can I fill out my current address in Norway on the DS160, it will differ from the one in the I-129f K1 visa application. Will this be something they will ask about or find odd?

On the I-1209f K1 visa I filled out my sister address as my "mailing address" since I knew I would move back to Norway eventually. I have had trouble receiving mail at my current apartment so are planning on putting my sisters address again as my "mailing address" on the DS160. Am I guaranteed that they will send my passport to this address?

  10. Hey everyone!

I have been reading so many posts for about 6 months now, and it has been extremely helpful. Me and my fiance (US citizen) got our NO2 a month ago, and as many here have suggested in their posts, we called NVC and got the case number and invoice id.The lady said that the file is sitting on her desk and that they will email my fiance when they send it to the embassy. We have, as recommended by others on this site, started to collect evidence. However, I am having a hard time understanding what I am supposed to do next. Some say there is a packet that will be sent to me, while others say that I can now start scheduling my interview when we have the case number. I am Norwegian so our case will be sent to the embassay in Sweden, and I was wondering if anyone could help me with a detailed explanation on what to expect/do next.  I checked my status and it says "AT NVC" with the following information below:

"Please follow the instructions you received from the National Visa Center (NVC) that list the six steps you must take before NVC can schedule your visa interview appointment. This includes submitting to NVC various fees, forms and documents. Once NVC has received all the required items, they will let you know if anything is missing or incomplete."

I'm very confused, am I supposed to pay/submit something to NVC? I thought it had to get to the embassy first? Please give me any advice you have :)
