I just wanted to say my condolence and thank you so much for this thread.

My father who was naturalized a few days ago had his grandmother pass away this morning and he's frantically trying to find solutions. I'm so glad I ran into this problem.

A friend who applied in December last year just got their interview scheduled for this October, so there is hope friends!

Now I wonder if there is a way to get them the naturalization ceremony schedule for them.

Yep!

Highly recommended if you live near a border state that has application centers. It's also Real ID compliant so you can fly domestically with it instead of your passport come Sept 2020. This only matters if you live in a state such as Washington where there are two tiers of IDs, regular & enhanced, with differing prices.

I would get a state id before her ceremony or right after, then go get her passport. It's always nice to have some form of identification while your naturalization certificate is in transit for several weeks.

There will be a period where she is without any identification (other than her foreign passport if she has one), but getting a state ID right after (or before) closes that period by a few weeks if you don't expedite the passport.

Get both!

You need to enter the child's passport into the NEXUS account so that he is shown as a dual citizen. From then on, you don't need to carry around his passport when crossing. But I would just in case since CBP has been known to refuse those without passports even though they have a NEXUS/EDL card.

Furthermore, using a passport to prove US citizenship is much easier than carrying around a CRBA.

@apl1983 congratulations! Did you request a name change by any chance? I wonder if folks who requested a name change are experiencing a significant slow down compared to those who didn't.

The biggest con I will say is taxes and banking requirements.

There are many banks overseas that refuse to serve US citizens because of the onerous reporting requirements for FATCA. You'll have to file an income tax every year no matter whether you live in the US or not but the first $90,000 is exempt from taxation. It can get weird and difficult if you have property (e.g. real estate or investments), businesses, etc abroad.

That said, I became a US citizen because this is the country I grew up in and I was fortunate enough to have acquired a green card. There really isn't another home for me elsewhere. Plus, this being the most powerful country on Earth (for now, whether we agree with it or not), being able to vote in its elections and partake in its political sphere means you can not only influence the direction of your community but possibly even the world.

I'm soon to be naturalized and I was wondering if anyone had any experiences updating their social security records right after naturalization? I ask since getting to the nearest social security administration is going to be difficult for me so I'm hoping to knock out everything in one day (e.g. ssn, passports, etc).

Will they turn me away if I go in before 10 days or hold onto my naturalization certificate?

It's quite easy to pull up everyone's information w/ their email. Most major communication and social media (e.g. twitter, FB, etc) are tied to an email and can be queried by government officials quite easily. I'm sure your rank and file USCIS IO doing naturalization cases will not be bothered to look through that if you have a "clean" bill (i.e. not middle-eastern, eastern european, etc).

I would not be livid at all. I'm actually writing to my Congressmembers urging them to do it.

I've lived in this country for many years under various visas and now due to my parents, I get to apply for citizenship. I don't know my home country's language anymore since I've stayed in the US for so long. I'd be terrified if I was sent back to my "home."

Even if the DACA folks get a clean path to citizenship, which will not likely happen under this extremely anti-immigrant (and yes, anti-immigrant, not anti-"illegal"-immigrant), it would not apply to adults to came here illegally—just former children who were brought here no choice of their own and made this place home (i.e. people like me).

DREAMers getting a clean path to citizenship can only help those of us who have been waiting forever. A clean DACA would mean that they would start exploring how awful the legal immigrant path is and when those DREAMers become US citizens, vote, and run for office, I'm sure they will not forget how much of a cluster this whole process is.

P.S. If we truly believe in meritocracy, we need to get rid of birth-right citizenship, make everyone born to US citizens and on US soil be US nationals instead and make them apply for US citizenship under the same conditions as everyone else when they turn 16 or 18. Blows my mind that most Americans I meet don't even know their own state's governor or how often we elect senators and congressmembers.

I never heard of someone getting RFE'd w/o any records and for a five year non-marriage based naturalization.

The incompetence of this government is astounding to me. USCIS offices will most likely not close but I do know that SOME employees at USCIS will be furloughed. A friend of mine was working at USCIS as a Jr employee and was told to just not come in after the government shutdown lasted over a week. 

Furthermore, getting US passports may be difficult as passport agencies might be closed.

It gets a little weirder when you're flying since who knows which passport the worker at the airline counter will put in.

I'm curious on what is considered to be a "subversive" organization or a being a member of the "Communist" party? I know several immigrant friends who are members of local left-wing parties like the Democratic Socialists of America or local climate change mitigation organizations.

Is the government willing to define that as "Communist" or "subversive" and deny them immigration or naturalization benefits? The law is worded extremely vaguely it seems.

Unless there is something particular about your case (e.g. undisclosed criminal record, etc), this is a good sign. It'll just be reviewed by another officer (most likely a supervisor) and it'll go through.

It's not about special favors. They are doing the job of keeping the departments of the executive branch accountable to its constituents. Once you file that form, the process is still the same (i.e. everyone has to go through the same checks and interview), it's just that a manager or someone dedicated to answering congressional inquiries will examine the file.

It might have something to do with a name check or verifying how you got your green card, etc. Did USCIS give you a reply?

I'm so sorry it's taking you so long. I do know that the average is around 10 months to get an interview from people who I know that works as a congressional case worker.

But I applied in November and my interview is scheduled for January. I believe my case is an anomaly.
