  1. hello guys, thanks so much..u never let me down... by monday ill be calling ss to go ahead and file.. love u all......

    joy n rick

Monday is a federal holiday - offices will be closed. Also, you need to wait 2 weeks to file for your SSN.

You'll also need to apply in person at your local SSA office. They will not do anything over the phone.

  2. I went to my local SSA yesterday. I arrived in the states just 9 days ago and the guy found me on the system and requested my number - told me I'd get the card within 2 weeks and if I wanted to know the number before then, to go back to the office on Tuesday and they would be able to let me know it. I have heard that some people in SSA are unaware that K1 holders are entitled to a SSN so maybe if you tried another office then they would issue one. But as you guys are now married, I'm not sure where that would leave you - I've heard that it is harder to get one once married than before.

  3. HA, the generally accepted equivalency seems to be that 5 GCSEs at C or above are roughly equivalent to a basic HS diploma, and that A-Levels are roughly equivalent to AP classes. That was what I found when I was trying to "Americanise" my CV.

Anybody who only manages "a couple of GCSEs" would not have a HS diploma. When I took mine (1999), only the kids considered special ed took less than 6. 3 A-Levels are needed to get into pretty much any university - be it a rebranded polytechnic or not. If they're roughly equivalent to AP classes, then aren't we requiring more of the kids who go to uni in the UK than we are of the kids who go to college in the US? I'm covering work in intermediate community college math classes right now that I did when I was 13 years old. There's definitely a difference in the material learnt (which was a diplomatic way of saying "the quality of education, IMHO" :D ).

    But that's a tangent. :P

11 GCSEs will be ok - I have 3 alevels but I didnt get great grades

  4. Well - as Jamal has a day off to take me to the SSA today, we went. It was all good thou - I was already in the system and the guy processed it fine, gave me a letter saying that I will receive the card within 2 weeks and if I went back on Tuesday then they will be able to give me the number! Needless to say, I'm very happy! This time next month I expect to be driving! lol!!!

Except that I was verified in Tucson two days after my arrival. When talking to their office since then the card was sent on Feb 1st. (I can verify this because at the 2 week time I was able to go into the office and get a print out of my acutal SSN... I needed that for my military id was going to expire... they told me then the card was issued Feb 1) I just never got it... possible sent back by USPS because I didn't have my name in the mailbox. Who knows why the lady was so rude to feather. There are nice SSA people out there. Some have no clue... I have encountered problems at the 6th St. SSA Office with people not being able to change my last name or know what to do with a K-1 visa without talking to someone else. I don't see a problem with going and seeing if they can verify your name...

We went to the main one on Campbell and even though the wait was long, everyone knew what they were doing!

  5. Hi! I'm here now in Tucson, Arizona. I'm looking for a filipina friends here Tucson Arizona coz I'm alone. Let's keep in touch and get together

I'm new in Tucson too! I'm from England thou!!

that's cool! I hope we will get to know each other and become good friends. I'm here in Avenida Ribero. How about you?

:) I'm in east Tucson - how long have you been here? I arrived a week ago.

  6. I work as a GED examiner and there have been many people from countless countries who had to get their GEDs. Many of these people had college and or doctorate (sp?) degrees from their home countries. The cool thing about Arizona is the test is offered in Spanish and French.

    Good luck!

wait .. so I wanted to attend college in Pima and I will need to get a diploma or GED even though I went to high school, passed my exams and went to college and took a-levels in the uk??!! Is this rule just to where you work or the whole of AZ/US? So do international students need to do all that or am i just not understanding this??

  7. Why are you coming down to little Tucson to go to SSA Office.... You do realize that if you have any problems you have to return to the same office that you first applied at... and that's a 4 hour drive I wouldn't want to make without a drivers license.... Just a thought.... You can always go in to the office and see if they can verify your name. They could with me 2 days after me arriving... But, I never actually got my card.

O .. I actually live in Tucson. I took a direct flight from the UK to Phoenix coz I didnt want to deal with the hassle of changing planes in the states. So I can go in there and ask if they can verify my name? If they cant then I'll be able to come back later and try again without actually applying and having to go though manual verification??

  8. I arrived in Phoenix last week Thursday and wanted to go to the SSA office in Tucson tomoro - which will be 8 days from when I first arrived to apply for my SSN. Do you think this will be enough time for my information to have been received by SSA? I ask because Jamal has a day off tomoro and it will be the only time he'll be able to take me, plus I wanna hurry up and get it so I can get my driving license before I get married!!! Any help would be great :) Thanks
