  1. apparently the older kid went to live with his father after a few weeks. perhaps the "mom" told them it would not be for very long, who knows. but after the older left i suspect there was no further contact between the two kids. the entire story is full of no one noticing or saying anything. it's sad.
  2. i've always wondered about that. wouldn't she call 911 after an hour or two?
  3. (story is just over a year old, but this completely amazes me) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In 2020, while France was grappling with the Covid pandemic, a nine-year-old boy was left to fend for himself in an unheated second-floor flat overlooking the cemetery. His ordeal began when his mother went to live with another woman and ended two years later when a neighbour finally alerted the police. At some point in 2020, Alexandra appears to have decided simply to leave both of her boys behind in Nersac. After a few weeks, the elder of the two went to live with his father, while his younger brother remained alone in the flat. The boy nevertheless went on to complete his last year at his primary school, Alfred de Vigny, a five-minute walk from his home, as if nothing had happened. His marks were good — so good that none of the teachers suspected anything at home had changed. The same appeared to be true when he turned 11 and moved to a middle school at Châteauneuf-sur-Charente, seven miles to the southwest. “He did his homework, he was well dressed, he was clean and he was always on time. Kids like that fly under the radar. We don’t worry about them.” But the winters he spent alone were hard: the gas supply to the flat was not working — which meant the flat had no heating. The trial heard he slept under three duvets. more at https://www.thetimes.com/world/article/of-course-we-knew-how-can-a-9-year-old-boy-live-alone-for-two-years-gckvmgc0j
  4. A Missouri woman accused of trading her foster child for an exotic monkey has been arrested. Brenda Ruth Deutsch, 70, of Lincoln County, was arrested on three felony counts of neglect, child abuse and child endangering stemming from initial allegations of a missing child who was later located in Texas, Missouri prosecutors announced Sunday. Lincoln County Prosecutor Mike Wood told NBC News in a phone call Wednesday that Deutsch, who he said has fostered more than 200 children for about 15 to 20 years, is also being investigated in connection with allegations that she traded the child for a monkey. more monkey business at https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/missouri-foster-mom-trading-child-monkey-rcna200379

  15. US Supreme Court temporarily blocks order to return migrant deported to El Salvador in error April 7 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court temporarily halted on Monday a judge's order requiring President Donald Trump's administration to return by the end of the day a Salvadoran man who the government has acknowledged was deported in error to El Salvador. Chief Justice John Roberts, acting on behalf of the court, paused the order by U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis that the administration return Kilmar Abrego Garcia by the end of Monday, in response to a lawsuit filed by the man and his family challenging the legality of his deportation. more at https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-facing-monday-deadline-return-wrongly-deported-maryland-man-el-salvador-2025-04-07/

  18. Dire wolves, made famous by “Game of Thrones,” went extinct some 13,000 years ago. Now, researchers have bred gray-wolf pups that carry genes of their ancient cousins. For more than a decade, scientists have chased the idea of reviving extinct species, a process sometimes called de-extinction. Now, a company called Colossal Biosciences appears to have done it, or something close, with the dire wolf, a giant, extinct species made famous by the television series “Game of Thrones.” In 2021, a separate team of scientists managed to retrieve DNA from the fossils of dire wolves, which went extinct about 13,000 years ago. With the discovery of additional DNA, the Colossal researchers have now edited 20 genes of gray wolves to imbue the animals with key features of dire wolves. They then created embryos from the edited gray-wolf cells, implanted them in surrogate dog mothers and waited for them to give birth. The result is three healthy wolves — two males that are 6 months old and one female that is 2 months old, named Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi — that have some traits of dire wolves. more at https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/07/science/colossal-dire-wolf-deextinction.html
  19. as one of those older people, i can see why some would be angry. but then again, investing is risky. i didn't start a 401k until just over a year ago, and i'm not counting on it for any part of my retirement. stock markets go up and down and it will go back up, unless we have a major disaster/war somewhere.
  20. what i referenced earlier - not a go fund me page, but one called givesendgo and the screenshot is about 4 minutes old as of this post.
