We showed up with our kids at the courthouse at 9:40am.  Even though the letter said 10 am but the actual ceremony didn’t happen until 11 am.  All the petitioners were lined up to surrender our green cards, be seated and had a small presentation from USCIS officer about what to do after becomes citizen.  Friends and family joined in before the judge showed up and we started to have opening remarks, music rendition, guest talk, take oath of allegiance (they have it in the booklet), pledge of allegiance, and lastly we got to introduce ourselves in front of everyone before picking up our naturalization certificate.  There were 44 people (1 was actually absent) in 19 countries got sworn in today. I got to say thank you to my family which was the most emotional and special to me.  We stayed behind to take pictures with the judge and the flag after the ceremony.   The most exciting moment for my kids was probably when they found out there were cookies and fruit punch outside waiting for them.  The whole ceremony including check-in lasted about 2 hours.  There was voting booth outside for registration but we were in a hurry for next appointment - passport. We scheduled it online as soon as we got the ceremony letter, and the post office needed the original certificate so I only got to take a picture of it before handing it off. 

 

Here I’m still can’t believe its done.  It was so much faster than I expected but it’s probably because where I’m at. Fingers crossed to all of you to have your interview dates very soon.  Good luck to everyone with this journey and I’ll come back to check up on you guys status and rooting for my Aug filers!

 

Finally if someone can help me to change my name and timeline into red font it will be greatly appreciated!  I still don’t know how to do it 🤣!

My IO actually had a stack of Oath letters printed out with the date and location, she just hand-wrote my name and A-number in the appropriate boxes and handed it to me. Does that count as the letter, I wonder, or will I still get a more "official" copy in the mail?

You'll get an official letter in the mail.  If there is one thing that the government loves it's paperwork.  🙂

@GloAndCole and @Prawninator, it was a really great day.  It has left me with a sense of permanence and security.  I thought that I would actually read the oath out aloud albeit bit by bit with everyone else at the same time, but the judge read it out like a question and everyone had to respond "I do".  Kind of odd to me, but hey.  Also we all stood for the judge on his arrival but people left immediately once they'd got their paperwork.  No grand applause for everyone at the end, most had already left.  My wife and I stuck around so I could have a picture next to the seal and then the flag.  I helped a lady take some nice pictures in the same way as she was on her own (so sad really!!).  But everyone was smiling and even the older more stoic of those present were eminating a sense of pride.

At the beginning we were given several bits of paperwork, one of which was the words to the star spangled banner, the words to the oath and the pledge of allegence, the pledge happened as quick as a flash before the judge sat down.  I had my right hand in the air like I was swearing an oath and my wife kindly showed me to place in on my heart.  By the time I realised what we were doing and I'd found my bit of paper with the words on it was over.  The oath I didn't need the words to and we didn't use the words to the star spangled banner.  (it was a bit of a mess if I'm honest - but I didn't care lol)

Once USCIS had processed all our paperwork we waited about an hour for the judge to arrive.  My wife liked the judges speech about freedom and the reason why people are lining up to come here and not places like Syria (Yes he said that!).  He talked about the entrepreneurial spirit in Americans and a few other things, but after waiting for an hour I personally didn't really care what he had to say. 

There was an opportunity to register to vote afterwards which I ignored because I'm going to do that at my local BMV.  I didn't see anything about updating the Social Security records, but on the paperwork it does say that you should wait tens business days before going to update it so that USCIS can forward some paperwork to them.

Jeans were worn by several at Cleveland!  But they looked out of place and to a degree disrespectful especially when you were asked not to were them. 

As I have read a few times on here:  "My contract with USCIS is over". 🙂

Yes, I did.  I had a shirt and tie with a sweater over the top.  Clean and un-torn blue jeans.  No issues. 

I'm not going to start my citizenship preparing to leave the US.  I understand that I could potentially regret not staying tethered to all these things, but quite frankly if the do do hits the fan in any way I have no reason or wish to run/swim back to the UK.

Assuming you still have a UK Bank Account keep that, very difficult to open a new one.

Ha, that's a good point about the embassy !  So, in reality I could get a new UK passport while in the US?  That would make things easier. 

With regards to the bank account, it will already have been frozen.  Nothing in or out for six months to a year and the bank freezes it and archives it.  I still have it, but can't log in.  Just change in there stopping charges from accruing.  Unless things have changed in the last few years the banks in the UK have a basic bank account that any citizen can open as long as you have an address.

It's an interesting feeling becoming a citizen of a place that you really love.  I never loved the UK and I have no plans to return.

There is an established relationship between the US and the UK apparently, my weak understanding is that one offsets the other,  I think if I claim the UK state pension it will reduce the US one.  The work pension won't reduce the US SS but I will probably pay tax on it in the UK and the US.  (I'm planning on working part time until I kick the bucket and use the pension and SS as a way to live a reasonable existence 🙂  (All good plans... lol)

Thank you to all of you for your responses.  Considering that there is a fee to fully renounce UK citizenship I'm not going to do that there seems very little point really.  I do have a pension and possibly the state pension if they would allow me to claim the latter.  From what Wuozopo said it seems to make sense to keep UK citizenship seeing as I won't lose it at any point unless I choose to pay to lose it (!) so, ultimately, even if I don't renew my UK passport I can still apply for a new one even if the old one runs out.  I could even enter the UK on an American passport and go to the British Embassy and get one if I had to.   I am sure that in the UK you don't have to have a passport to be a citizen,  I have my birth certificate to prove citizenship.  

Bottom line is no I don't have to renew it, but I might want one in the future.  - thanks everyone.  🙂

I'm reading lots of articles about dual citizenship US/UK and lots of questions being answered about renewing UK passports from the US etc.  My question is slightly different.  I have no plans to travel outside the US for the foreseeable future.  If I did I would apply for a US passport and use that at both ends - do I HAVE TO renew my UK passport?

I'm treating the Oath ceremony as a personal cutting of all my ties with the UK and I am not interested in collecting passports. 

(Just for clarity, my passport is currently in date for a few more years)

I've got my ceremony on November 2nd at 10:30am up in Cleveland!  Rock 'n' Roll!  
Now my only concern is where to park and which fast food American Cuisine to celebrate with afterwards lol

On the back of the letter is a list of questions that you have to complete on the day of the ceremony:
1. Since your interview, have you married, or been widowed, separated or divorced? Yes No
2. Since your interview, have you traveled outside the United States? Yes No
3. Since your interview, have you knowingly committed any crime or offense, for which you have not been arrested? Yes No
4. Since your interview, have you been arrested, cited, charged, indicted, convicted, fined, or imprisoned for breaking or
violating any law or ordinance, including traffic violations? Yes No
5. Since your interview, have you joined, become associated, or connected with any organization in any way, including
the Communist Party, a totalitarian organization, or terrorist group? Yes No
6. Since your interview, have you deserted from, claimed exemption from, or been separated or discharged from military
service? Yes No
7. Since your interview, has there been any change in your willingness to bear arms on behalf of the United States; to
perform non-combatant service in the armed forces of the United States; or to perform work of national importance

On the front it says that you have to bring the oath letter, your green card, All re-entry permits/Refugee travel documents 
and any other documents that USCIS have issued.  I have my original two year Green Card and my ten year Green Card, do I have to return 
BOTH of these on the day ?   Am I correct in thinking that "any other documents issued" mean just the Green Cards or all the notices that they 
have sent over the years too?

There is no column for this but maybe its helpful to someone:  My application was approved and my oath ceremony scheduled on 10/19/2018.  I'm waiting for the letter to arrive online/mail to indicate the date and time of the ceremony.

I've been practicing the 100 questions using home made flashcards (using index cards) and after going through them many times a day and gradually reducing the number of self testing times each day I have managed to get to a place where I feel confident about all of them.  It took about a month of daily practice.

I have my citizenship application paperwork in a folder and my passports, GC and other ID are all ready.  I personally don't think I have anything to worry about with regards to the reading and writing part being English I should sail through that part.

I'm going to be nervous on the day I know, but at the same time I think I have little to be concerned about.  I'm actually more nervous about driving through Cleveland and finding my pre-paid parking first thing in the morning.

I would like to wish everyone on here a happy and successful next few months with your applications.  This website has been a blessing through this process.  Is there a way I/we can support it through a donation maybe?  This part has been relatively easy compared to the I-30 and finding out what to do right in the beginning when you have no idea what to do and the USCIS website is just pages and pages and pages of words.

I hand wrote the questions on one side of a set of note cards and wrote the answers on the reverse of each card, I'd already chosen my preferred answers, like you, but as my confidence with the answers grew so did my paranoia that I wasn't doing it right.  Glad to know you don't have to remember all the nitty gritty details.    This is hard enough when you're an English speaker I can imagine how onerous this is for people for whom English is a second language.  Thanks again for setting my mind at rest, much appreciated.

In the one hundred questions and answers that we have to learn some of them have several answers on them for example:

What stops one branch of government from becoming too powerful?    - Checks and balances  - Separation of powers

Both are correct but its easier to remember one of them.  Are we expected to remember both answers for questions that don't ask for one or two responses in the structure of the question?

I just logged into my USCIS account to see if they have received my Biometrics and I have an interview date of Thursday October 18th at 9:45 in the morning!  That's fast!  It's for the actual interview too !  (#######! -lol)  Darn it, now I have to learn all those pesky flashcards.

Just came back from my Biometrics appointment.  It went smoothly, just needed letter and Green card.  They scanned my fingers, got me to sign a pad and gave me a booklet for the questions.  Done.  Nothing about signing to say that I swear that my application was completed by me or that it was complete and correct.  Anyway, done.  Roll on the next part.

This is just about having upto date records

So the questions at the ceremony are just to wrap up the case and ensure that nothing detrimental has changed my eligibility to naturalise - right up to the very event.  That makes sense, at least they are thorough.

It seems like the citizenship process is more about tracking you than anything else.  I can't imagine the value this has for USCIS?  Especially that they've already given a Green Card.  Thanks for your help.

In the Citizenship guide it says that prior to the oath you have to "Answer questions about what you have done since your interview", does anyone know what this entails.  Thanks.

If you are scanning these documents in aim for a lower quality scan or reduce the resolution of the scan a little (ie use 100dpi instead of 300dpi).  I had issues with a large document I scanned it was 5.9MB on my USB drive but it wouldn't upload, I reduced the quality and it turned into ~5.4mb and it uploaded fine.  As long as they can read the document easily the quality can be lower.  I hope this helps.

Just got my Bio-metrics letter online.  My appointment is on 09/12/18 🙂  - I've updated the chart to reflect this.

Hi everyone,

My case was updated at around 6am this morning with a notification that my biometrics appointment had been scheduled.  In the notification it says that the appointment time may take a while to appear in the Documents tab online.  Do you know how long it takes from the appointment notification being posted online to the appointment letter being posted online?  Also do they work on the weekends ??  It would be nice to know whether I need to check it tomorrow or whether I can leave it till monday.
