Nah, he's pretty ace at being a contributing partner in the relationship. This just fell on a bad day. We both left at the same time this morning. I told him days ago that I had a work function after work and couldn't be right home for the dogs. He said well duh I have football. We discussed this.

I got that all the time, sigh man. Go back in person and ask him, nicely, to please explain how anyone could possibly be overqualified to do a great job. Enthusiastically say that you're the most motivated candidate that he'll see all month (it's true!). Think of more statements (honest about you) that would convince you to hire yourself. I'm not sure. Some people are just angry and use issues like immigration as a way to find someone else to blame. Does that woman realise, for instance, that the people on the buses are subject to a legal process that can't be resolved overnight?
We have people like that that here in the UK who bang on about the affect of immigration (they don't distinguish between legal or illegal) by people from Eastern Europe. Despite it being proved fairly conclusively that immigrants don't actually 'steal jobs' or sponge off of benefits (in fact, it's the other way around), the myth still persists.
I think it has more to do with the visual impact of immigration (hearing people in your town/city speaking a different language from you) than any tangible effect.
