Donald Trump's Pants on Fire claim that he 'finished' the Obama birther talk

By Louis Jacobson on Friday, September 16th, 2016 at 2:06 p.m.

After years of promoting the theory that President Barack Obama was born in a foreign country -- one that has been consistently debunked by fact-checkers -- Donald Trump reversed course on Sept. 16, 2016, and said Obama was born in the United States.

"President Barack Obama was born in the United States. Period," Trump said while briefly addressing the subject at the end of a campaign event at his newly built hotel in Washington.

We’ve separately ruled this a Full Flop. But Trump’s other remarks on the so-called "birther" controversy have inspired fact-checks of their own.

Trump prefaced his statement about Obama’s birthplace by saying, "Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy. I finished it. I finished it. You know what I mean."

We rated the first part of that claim that "Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy" False.

Here, we’ll fact-check the assertion that Trump "finished it."

We didn’t hear back from the Trump campaign, but the evening before Trump’s announcement in Washington, Jason Miller, a senior communications adviser with the campaign, sent out a news release saying in part, "In 2011, Mr. Trump was finally able to bring this ugly incident to its conclusion by successfully compelling President Obama to release his birth certificate. Mr. Trump did a great service to the President and the country by bringing closure to the issue that Hillary Clinton and her team first raised."

So it appears that the campaign’s argument is that Trump pushed for Obama to release the long form of his Hawaii birth certificate on April 27, 2011, several years after the birther controversy bubbled up. Previously, a shorter version of the document had been available, but skeptics had been calling for the full document to be released.

Trump himself had made this case as early as Aug. 22, 2013, when he tweeted, "Why are people upset w/ me over Pres Obama’s birth certificate? I got him to release it, or whatever it was, when nobody else could!"

But for Trump’s argument to hold water, we see two conditions that have to be met. First, did Trump "finish" advocating for the birther viewpoint once Obama released the long-form birth certificate? And second, did Obama’s release of the long-form certificate "finish" the idea among American voters that Obama was born outside the United States?

In both cases, the answer is no.

Just so I am clear, Rump refuses to release his wife's immigrant records and now his wife herself, his taxes, his actual health records, his business associations, his role in his sham university, etc. etc.etc.
    But,
His supporters are comfortable blaming Obama and falsely crediting Hillary Clinton of starting the birther movement and Obama for letting it drag on by not releasing his birth certificate earlier? The one that failed to shut Rump up along with his fellow delusional birthers?

He was not supposed to be using the church as a political platform. He was supposed to be thanking the church for their role in helping with Flint.

Janelle, this is correct and is what Rev. Timmons said in a prior statement. By stopping Trumps political attacks, she was protecting her churches tax-exempt status as it applies to IRS rules: Under the Internal Revenue Code, all section 501c3 organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office. Contributions to political campaign funds or public statements of position (verbal or written) made on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office clearly violate the prohibition against political campaign activity. Violating this prohibition may result in denial or revocation of tax-exempt status and the imposition of certain excise taxes.
Flint already has plenty of problems and Trump should have respected this and not use the church in violation of IRS tax laws for his own political gain. Rotten guy.

Since the subject of this thread is the appearance of a fourth grade teacher I have a story to tell about one of my fourth grade teachers.
In the fourth grade I had a female teacher for mathematics named Ms. Williams. She was black like all of the teachers at my school since I was attending a school that was probably 95% black. She was a full figured, light-skinned, and very attractive lady. The one thing I noticed on my first day of class was her stockings. They were sheer but they seemed to have a strange pattern to them. As she walked around the room I got a closer look at her calves and noticed what I thought was a strange pattern on her stockings was actually the very long matted hair on her legs. I have yet to see any other woman with such hairy legs.

I see nothing wrong with moderator action in this case. It is always bewildering to me how many things that are said on this forum that are never removed immediately and with no consequences to the speaker. It is further bewildering the times when certain action is taken against some users that said little to nothing wrong, but others way out of line were not. Of course, that may be disagreed with.
The TOS is there for a reason and the administration for whatever reason it deems can resolve to terminate an account for any reason (even those that do not make sense). Those are the terms that every poster agrees to and takes for granted upon sign up. Does the TOS bolster or allow full free speech? No, it does not. Over the years I have worked on private forums and public corporate owned forums (before the invention of social media).. and it's the same thing time and time again. Things get out of hand, and someone gets banned. Then there is complaining about being banned and a lot of bluster about free speech. I've been threatened before, called every name in the book, told I will be killed, and oh the fun one of saying I will be sued; all for enforcing a TOS against a poster. I've seen posters come back and hack a forum for revenge, or sign up with 100 sock accounts in protest. It's amusing, but really what's the point? Free speech is great, and that's the point of robust discussion and debate - but forums have rules, and those rules are privately developed and do not operate in the confines of what is Constitutionally protected. There are other forums and chatrooms out there that have a more hearty respect for free speech and carry out an anything goes attitude. I'd suggest that some of what LiB had to say would be more welcome there. Rules are the rules, in a perfect world they'd be applied fairly. In this case, I find it fair.. but that obviously will vary from person to person.
Even this thread is slowly trending into the argument zone of which there is no real point, and eventually it will be locked. You all know it will. The mods are probably groaning about it right now. (Hi guys! Ya, I know right?! Why can't people just stop arguing and goading for five minutes and have a moment of love with ice cream and fluffy bunnies, and hugs and rainbows, and copious amounts of alcohol or celebrate all the things they do agree on... whoa am I saying this out loud? Sorry, I'll shut up.) Life is too short, and there are plenty of threads left to argue with each other about.
