  1. “It’s ridiculous—we are talking about the biggest retailer in the world. I may have half my squad there for hours”

    https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-walmart-crime/

The company has one worker for every 524 square feet of retail space, a 19 percent increase in space per employee from a decade ago.

In terms of profit, all this has worked: Sales per employee in the U.S. have grown 23 percent in the past decade, to $236,804. For criminals, however, the cutbacks were like sending out a message that no one at Walmart cared, no one was watching, and no one was likely to catch you.

  2. How about that justification piece that central to German gun laws.?Justification excluding self defense, that is. German and Cali laws are somewhat similar once you have cleared that justification burden - and that's not simple. Out of Germany's population of 80 million, only about 2 million are registered gun owners. There are estimates that some 20 million firearms are owned illegally in Germany. Not sure what guns that is supposed to include but I find that figure hard to believe.

I would say thats yet another example of common ground with California as show by the Peruta case.

But here is something Germans dont have to deal with. A handgun roster that has effectively frozen the purchase of new handguns. In California about the most modern firearm you can buy is from the year 2013. As time progresses, less and less handgun models can be purchased.

Back in 2008 you could buy about 1400 different models of handguns in California. As of right now its dropped to 769. Thats about 80 models per year that are lost. If that were to continue at a steady rate, in about 9 years you won't be able to buy a modern handgun in the state.

  3. The pre-2014 figures come from elsewhere andmust include suicides. You're not getting to 30k + without the suicide by firearm count. But the 2014 and 2015 figures in your link actually show an increase in gun deaths while the chart in the PF article shows a rapid decline. Doesn't add up.

I looked in to it a bit more. Suicides are included they are simply delayed by a period of time for the current year (2016).

The PF article was written mid 2015 so it hadn't fully tabulated.

I think the older numbers are CDC related but apparently are extrapolated.

  4. The 2014 and 2015 figures would appear to be exclusive of sucide by firearm. But even between the 2014 and 2015 figure, there would seem to be a different basis for the numbers. If gun homicides had dropped roughly 25% year over year, we would have heard about that.

Looks like they come from here:

    http://www.gunviolencearchive.org/past-tolls

I don't see any reference to suicide only though.

  5. Not even close.

We have a 5 year Certification similar to the Waffenbesitzkarte.

We have a similar "knowledge test"

Fully Automatic arms are also completely illegal in California.

We have similar storage requirement laws.

We are limited in how many guns can be bought per year.

You can actually buy a broader range of guns (mostly handguns) in Germany than California. We have to do a background check every time ammo is purchased. I don't think Germans do that.

You will have to have an "ammo card" in two years. Germans don't do that.

About the only thing I don't see in California is the 25 and under psych evaluation.

  6. I thought Obama was going to take your guns? He had better hurry up. Of course he requires 2/3 majority in Congress, so that should be no problem.

No but California is going to be trying to confiscate some guns and gun accessories....they have been signed into law this year actually. Where California goes so does the US they say.

Gun confiscation is here my friend.

  7. I think things are going to get much much worse in the US in terms of crime. I suspect that we look back a decade from now and see the early 2000s as relatively crime free.

Police are going to step back more and more and get less involved to avoid issues which is going to cause a major crime wave. You can already see it starting in a few states.

I see it already in San Francisco.

  8. The issue is that healthcare unlike other products cannot be run in a capitalist manner. You have a population that has X demand that will not adapt /adjust using market forces.

I think the US in a way is very lucky to have seen how other countries have developed their systems and learn from their mistakes. Personally I think we need an NHS lite. Where everyone gets basic care, but you probably would want supplemental insurance.

As an example, dental would not be a part of the program.

  9. was the terror attack carried out at the school (and by a muslim) and did that attack pose more of a threat or effect the person seeking the non muslim roommate disproportionately?

I'm not finding a news of an attack at this school. Can you link me?

was the terror attack carried out at the school (and by a muslim) and did that attack pose more of a threat or effect the person seeking the non muslim roommate disproportionately?

Regardless, I'm not seeing any of your conditions providing a pass for discrimination.

  10. was someone applying to be a roommate that was white and they were turned away? considering this isn't a typical tenant/landlord situation and the current atmosphere at pitzer, i think it would be within their right to choose a minority roommate. jokes about safe spaces aside, i think this is a legitimate concern: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/black-pain-gone-viral-racism-graphic-videos-can-create-ptsd-like-trauma/

Dangerous road in my opinion. As an example, it might be similar to someone saying they don't want a muslim roommate due to a recent terror attack.

  11. It is racial discrimination and its probably illegal.

California law also prohibits discrimination based on any of the following:

    • A person's medical condition or mental or physical disability; or
    • Personal characteristics, such as a person's physical appearance or sexual orientation that are not related to the responsibilities of a tenant;40 or
    • A perception of a person's race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, ancestry, familial status, source of income, disability or medical condition, or a perception that a person is associated with another person who may have any of these characteristics.41

PS. There is an exception in the case of roommates for gender only.
