Hello all, been a while since I've been here. Wondered if you had all seen this recent article in the Scottish Herald which refers to the new immigration rules.

I do think family based immigration (especially one's spouse and minor children) is a special, sacrosanct subset of immigration policy and should be not be lumped in with everyone else.
I don't know why spouses have to be more scrutized but restrictions for new EU entrants (like they have in Denmark, France, Germany other places) are not part of the agreement.

Twitter feed with photos from today's demonstration in London outside the Home Office, and subsequent meeting with MP's in the Grand Committee Room.

I asked if there will be provisions for co-sponsors, and if not, why not.
Yeah, I know writing to reps is, on the whole, fruitless. I once worked for £6 an hour as an assistant for the Scottish Government. Most of my job was to copy and paste standardized answers to letters the minister responsible for the policy I worked on, according to correspondence rules (correspondence to UK reps must receive a reply within a 6 weeks deadline). I'm sure there is a temp or an intern copy-pasting my letter as I type and the minister will never actually really be involved. But the benefit of writing to reps is that sometimes a deluge of correspondence can send a message to policymakers.
Plus I can be an unsatisfied grumbler when I get my unsatisfying response, and as a Brit, that is my prerogative!

I remember those days were i was calling my wife on the phone everyday because she was half way around the world. I waited 9 months before she entered the united states. As long as she is here with me, i dont care how long it takes for her ROC to be approved. Things could be worse, like being separted from your spouse again.

    Good idea
A very valuable thread which will help many Brits avoid future pitfalls - providing they read it first
This legislation seeks to address a genuine problem by disadvantaging those who are not the problem
That makes it cruide and simplistic and it has been formulated in a slap-dash and LAZY manner
Average income indeed. If you have one foot in the fridge and one foot in the fire, then on average you are comfortable

I'm going to report my own post here and ask that Moderation please pin this thread. Perhaps the thread title should be changed to read something like "Before you move to the US, please read this thread".
Many UK citizens marry and move to the US with a plan to return to the UK in the future. It is VITAL they understand how difficult it will be to return to the UK with their American spouse. These changes should be a part of EVERY US/UK couples discussion about where they will spend their married lives.
Pinning the thread will also keep UK/US couples informed of changes to the rules. The rules are new and they will be challenged. But it may take court cases to change them. It may take years for things to change. This information is crucial for US/UK couples.

I'm glad the same woman responsible for letting thousands into the country without proper vetting at Heathrow has now decided to clamp down on family visas

I know that some intern will probably reply in 6 weeks exactly (I did that job once) but I tried. I might encourage my family and friends to do the same.

Thanks. It's pretty upsetting reading to learn that moving back to the UK would be more prohibitive than what we went through to move to the USA. Quicker, maybe, but tougher.
Not that I'm pre-planning to move back to the UK before I've even hit US shores, but it's nice to have options. Now I'd have to get an £18.6k job in the UK to before he could join me? Also, to be on 'probation' for five years is just galling.
It just makes me really sad, not just for me but for all long-distance couples. Angry letters to MPs imminent...

I'm pretty astonished by some of the trolls on this thread - not sure what they were expecting from it at all.
