Community SpotlightPSA: If entering the USA 2 years after marriage, kindly remind the immigration officer of this
spicynujac posted a topic in IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & Procedures,
When we last entered the US, our immigration officer said "Oh, hmm I wonder if I could go ahead and change you an IR-1." The agent right next to him said "Yes, you can do that" and he acted surprised. His comments made it pretty clear he was going to erroneously issue us a CR-1 and he seemed to not even know he could change the visa status until his coworker advised him (THANK GOODNESS she overheard!). I don't know how onerous the process is to correct such an oversight but I'm glad we didn't have to find out!
Just wanted to pass this along in the hopes it saves someone from any problems with the wrong stamp being placed in the passport, as I've read about here before.... I would kindly remind the officer "We married >2 years ago. We can enter with an IR-1 visa now right?"- 15 replies
Traveled to Canada for 20 days after entering the U.S. on a K-1 visa (June 1–22). Seeking reentry under Automatic Visa Revalidation (AVR).
Dovahkiinali0605 posted a topic in K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures,
I entered the U.S. on a K-1 visa on June 1st and left for Canada on June 2nd, remaining here for 20 days. I am now attempting to return to the U.S. through Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) using Automatic Visa Revalidation (AVR). My K-1 visa is expired, but my I-94 is still valid. Am I ok?-

Wrong USCIS application form filed by my lawyer!
narayan333 posted a topic in K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress Reports,
Hello, so my wife came in k-1 visa to USA and we got married and all. We filled for work permit and green card together but while doing that my lawyer filed for I-130 no idea why. Will that application make my process for work permit and green card slow? If so how do I withdrawal that application? My lawyer isn’t helpful at all. I need some help…-

Seeking advice for Thai/US couple - What US visa path to take?
PeachyTocker posted a topic in K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures,
My gf and I live in Thailand but spend 2-4months in the US per year. Once/if we have children age 5+, the time split would become vice versa. We have no plans to live full-time in the United States in the next 5 years, but I visit my family and friends 2-3x per year for 2-3 weeks at a time. I would love it if she can join me for those trips and experience that part of my life. What options do we have -- US visa wise, maybe a tourist or fiance visa later? Other?

Abandoned AOS and now regret it
Mariammaria posted a topic in Adjustment of Status Case Filing and Progress Reports,
Please be nice, I know I made a mistake... But got my K1 approved and arrived in the US June 25, 2024 and applied for AOS February 25, 2025 -- then left the US (abandoned my AOS). Will I be banned for re-entry to the US -- even under a spouse visa?-

US Citizen with Foreign Fiancé: When and How to Get Married?
gandalf1989 posted a topic in IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & Procedures,
I'm currently living and working in the United States. My fiancé currently lives in Japan. We have been dating for about 6 months, and we have met in person several times, but we are not yet married.
My fiancé will be visiting me in the United States on a tourist visa some time in March or April and staying for about 3 months. I want to file for a fiance/spouse visa asap -- what's next?-

Recent Immigration Discussionsi693 - potential incorrect entry by the preparer 5:55 pm today

1 RepliesHello all,
I noticed that in I-693, Part 5, Applicant's Identification Number, the preparer entered:
Form of Identification: Passport
Document Identification Number: "Here they entered my 'Personal Identification No.' available in my passport"
However, I am pretty sure they needed to enter the Passport No. right? I am using my passport no. in other files such as i485 and so on, I am not sure why they entered my "personal identification no" that I have never used outside my home country. Is this part important, should I ask them to re-do the whole thing? They put so many vaccination evidence etc. too so I do not want them to miss something else in the second go. Any help or experience with this is appreciated.
New Interview Waiver Update 5:02 pm today

1 RepliesThere's a new interview waiver update: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/News/visas-news/interview-waiver-update-july-25-2025.html. My brother-in-law appears to qualify but he has 2 years left on his B1/B2. He's an Indian citizen and in New Delhi it is taking 8 months for interview required visas per the State Dept. website. They don't publish interview waiver wait times. Should he apply for a new visa before expiry to make sure he gets into that 1 year window in case processing times are longer than published? He has plenty of ties to home country and has no interest in living in the US but since his first B1/B2 my spouse became an LPR (and will likely be a USC by the time he applies).

10 RepliesMe and my Indonesian GF have been dating in long distance relationship since Oct 2023. We ve met 5 times since then and I ve met her family however she has not been able to meet mine as she was rejected for US tourist visa earlier in the year. Now considering in 2026 possible marriage plans and want to know the best plan either between these two options.
I understand some of the basics like K1 costs more and cannot work while in US for several months until adjusting status but my situation might be different
-I am us citizen by birth and have stable job here living in NJ
-she is 27 has college degree and works for Indonesian company making approximately $500 usd a month
-She says she hears bad things about US so she would like to visit first before marriage as she is worried she won t like it that s why I consider K1
-I am divorced since Nov 24 and was in separation/divorce process originally when we met, will it affect this at all?
-I hear about the timeline of k1 where recipient is not able to work, but able to come here, but being that her salary is low I m not sure it makes a difference if she can t work temporarily. Would she be able to attend any school on k1 or do odd jobs for cash like babysitting?
-if she gets k1 could she go back to Indonesia or travel to any other country during the initial 90 day period and get married there? As she wants to have family party in Indonesia
-she is Muslim so if we officially marry overseas it would have to be somewhere like Singapore i assume
-regarding my own protection, I do love her and want to marry her but I know a lot of risks are involved especially since we didn t live together long term yet and only went on vacations together, is there any legal benefit in marrying overseas vs in the US if I want to get a pre-nup or is it invalid in all cases because I signed to support her?
-approximately how much is the cost difference in K1 vs spouse visa? It might be offset by the cost of flights and me traveling to see her
-I understand the wait for k1 is around 12 months and then have to wait another 8-12 months to work whereas spouse visa is 18-24 months to get, is that correct? So basically is around the same timeline altogether just that she can work in Indonesia until getting approved for spouse visa?

3 RepliesI am making a return trip to The Philippines (Cagayan De Oro) this October and I need some advice please. My last trip was last year in October and I rented a vehicle to get around in and so many here advised me not to do this because of the treacherous driving conditions there and I was very glad I took the advice. Man, they are crazy over there. I have never seen anything like it. Its a free for all where road rules are thrown out the window and a total disregard for vehicle safety. Needless to say, I hired a taxi driver that is part of the not so immediate family and he was able to get us where we needed to go for the short time I was there.
I will be going this time for two weeks instead of just one and need some ideas on how to get around. This time will be a lot different as while I was there for my first trip, I ended up becoming a father and will have a 3 month old baby in tow as well as a 4 year old. I thought of renting a vehicle this time as it will be my second trip and I am aware of the driving conditions there. Who ever gets to the intersection first wins and gets to go first. If many of you think this is still not a good idea, then could you enlighten me on modes of transportation that I could use that will not break my wallet. I was thinking that I could hire a driver for the two weeks I am there but not sure how to go about doing that. I also thought about doing the Grab thing but not sure how that would work.
So please help me out and let me know what the best way would be for me to get around with my newly formed family.
Thank you all so much.
