I dooooo that with Javi too. He says some words really funny. I either repeat them or ask him to repeat them. He gets aggravated at me when I ask him to repeat them because he thinks I'm making fun of him. I'm really not. I just think it's so cute how he pronounces some words.

I don't think the OP meant writing in your SO's accent as much as copying his/her speech patterns - I find myself doing this in IM, dropping articles, simplifying verb conjugation/tenses('yesterday I buy' instead of 'yesterday I bought') and so forth. It makes the conversation flow better, anyway, quicker to write, lol I am also trying to learn Nepali so it's a mix of Nepali and 'Neplish'.

I can mimic accents fairly easily, but I tend not to adopt them unconsciously. I wanted to beat my sister over the head when she came back from Ireland affecting a brogue. ("I just picked it up!!" "Give me a break." It was gone in about two days.) There's a handful of professors who do this, too. One semester at Cambridge and they spend the rest of their lives pretending to be British. And everyone titters at them behind their backs. ("Dude, he's from Kentucky!")

C.'s accent and vocabulary is very close to my own. I don't say 'toque' or 'mum.' And if I were mimicking an accent in writing, there's no way it wouldn't be intentional.

Yes! I tend to pick up the way people talk around me very easily, without noticing it. Not just english, but in spanish too. So I've picked up a lot of Justin's phrases and accent. I sudenly find myself saying "cool deal" and "it's all good"

As I said in the other thread, I am annoyed that I do it. I lived there for 3 years, and I fought very hard while I was there to not pick up any slang or anything. But I think over time, it has a way of creeping in.... Like I would always say 'bathroom' and some people would be all 'eh?' Once we were in a restaurant, and I asked where the bathroom was, and the lady was all 'you can't take a bath here' So then I started saying 'loo' just for simplicy's sake.

I know D says some American slang cos he always hears me say certain things.

I actually hate that I still say it and when I catch myself doing it, I correct myself. But old habits die hard! heh. I feel many times it could be considered as contrived, but that may not always be the case all the time.

I don't speak like my SO. I believe that's because I was an adult at the time I came over. However, my son quickly adopted the US accent to 'fit in' at school.

If you do accidentally (or deliberately) copy your SO's accent, does it embaress you or do you like it?

Do you find yourself IMing with the same accent?

Accents are cute in my opinion but sometimes (the Madonna one has been pointed out) it seems false if it appears you are deliberately assuming an accent.

You can't write with an accent - an accent is a way of speaking "determined by the phonetic habits of the speaker's native language carried over to his or her use of another language" - if you're typing in proper English, you won't be typing phonetically and therefore won't "write" with an accent. You can use slang, etc from their language, or use less advanced or incorrect grammatical or phonetic structures - but that is more dialect and not accent. Dialect is composed of syntax/vocabulary/etc while accent really is not and is more solely pronunciation, so it would be a dialect you'd be able to write with.

Spelling is also different than accent, and I suppose to "write" with an accent, you'd be altering your spelling, so you'd just be doing it to call attention to yourself since it would be deliberate and not unconscious. Like, I wouldn't wake up one day and start writing "espanish" instead of "Spanish" unless I wanted to call attention to myself and look like an idiot in the process.

ANYWAY, I do not speak English like my husband, but he sounds like a Peruvian whose spent too much time with a New Yorker. (He is starting to tawk and wawk and eat sawce, unfortunately.)

Perhaps surprisingly I don't speak with an American accent, despite being here for 4 years. Friends of mine who have visited haven't commented on it at any rate (though there is that whole thing about linguistic assimilation and adaptation).

As far as dialect goes - I do use certain American dialect words, in both speech and writing - really for reasons of expediency. Its too much of a hassle to explain what word X means to USCs and they invariably cause confusion, so its easier to use the local equivalents.
