Also my 2 cents about the Christmas tree...There seems to be conflict about the origin.

I think if someone calls it a Yule Tree, that is specifically secular. If someone calls it a Christmas tree, it adds more of a religious meaning. It originates from Pagan celebrations. The decoration of the tree itself did not get started by Christians, but was adopted later for various reasons like....thinking of the tree Jesus died on so adding it into the Christmas holiday, or just liking the way a tree looks when it's decorated, or people from the Pagan roots becoming Christians and keeping it in their traditions, just with a new Christian twist.

I think someone can decide what it means to them, since it's not overtly Christian IMO.

For me, it's part of the holiday decor in the season when I celebrate the birth of Jesus. SO that's what it means to me, but obviously doesn't mean that to everyone.

Some things are more obvious like the nativity scene, and the original St Nicholas..not the jolly red suit man we have today.

I shouldn't probably get involved because I know these discussions can get lengthy and I am feeling lazy...but just wanted to add a couple things. :innocent:

The Sabbath day law is under the Law in the Old Testament. If Christians were following that exactly, we wouldn't have church on Sunday it would be on the literal Sabbath day. That would be fine but I believe Jesus made it clear when he said he fulfilled the law, and he healed someone on the Sabbath which ticked off the Jewish religious leaders, also had his disciples gather food, another thing that ticked off the leaders. (Matthew 12:1-12 and Luke 13:10-17 just for some references).

So if this was truly a Christian nation, I don't think the "no work" thing would be enforced as strictly as some of you may think. It is meant as a day to rest and relax and think of God, but even Jesus did good work on the Sabbath. There is a big difference between the Law in the OT and how Christians live now according to what happened in the NT. That would also include that there would not be stonings in case anyone thinks that would be the case.

So there does seem to be some wiggle room there. Under a truly Christian nation, it would interesting to see who would decide what qualifies as 'good work'. Jonathan Edwards, a British triple-jumper, famously refused to compete on Sundays (tho according to Wikipedia, he's no longer Christian). I wonder if sports would qualify. Would Troll's example of banking be worshipping Mammon or God? Like I said, interesting experiment.

It would not be an experiment that hasn't been done before. We used to survive just fine with no one allowed to work one day a week. When I was a kid, everything was shut down and closed on Sunday.

Under a truly Christian nation, this would be more strictly enforced than just not opening shops. Think about all the things that happen for our society to continue as normal, which requires people to work on a Sunday. Electricity goes out for a whole city. Who can fix it, if you're not allowed to work?

Does this actually happen anywhere in the world?

I am pretty sure something pretty close is observed by Orthodox Jews.

Can you explain it at all?

I wish you and all of your accounts would get banned once and for all. You are nothing but a parasite on VJ. Look at your name for God's sake.

Some people actually have feelings. I'm shaking right now, I'm so angry. And you're just probably laughing, thinking, "I can't believe people get so worked up over what gets said on a message board." Well, guess what, they do. Well done, I hope you're proud of yourself.

You've baited me one too many times. I'VE FUKCING HAD IT.

Well, I'm guessing all the mom's and grandma's in the kitchen would still be allowed to perform the "good work" of cooking big meals for the family after Church.
