Mister Fancypants - Let's kick those dahamn illegal alien Irish folks out on their ####### too, but only when their numbers get to around 11 million. :) Better yet, they are "White" so they can stay. (((SHRUGSS))) ;)

How do you quantify 11 million illegal immigrants in terms of your daily life? I can't. There's supposedly over a million legal Filipinos in LA, but I've only seen a tiny fraction of them. In other words, how has the sheer number personally effected you?

A former Filipino political prisoner lamented how many illegal immigrants in the United States are forced to take desperate jobs for low pay and stressed the need for equal rights for women around the world last night at the Boston University Howard Thurman Center.

Ninotchka Rosca, an advocate for human rights and feminism, also spoke to the 50 students in attendance about other issues Filipinos face today, including sex trafficking and abused mail-order brides, which are common in the Philippines, she said.

Undocumented Filipinos in the United States will take almost any available work because of their desperate situations, Rosca said in her speech, sponsored by the BU Filipino Students Association and Wellesley College's Club Filipina.

"[There are an] estimated 12 million undocumented workers in the [united States]," Rosca said. "Roughly around 20 percent of these [people] work in households. Who else is going to accept such cheap wages?"

Rosca is an award-winning novelist who was a political prisoner exiled during the regime of Filipino dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who ruled the Philippines from 1965 to 1986.

Is it not possible for people to disagree with what others believe without being AGAINST each other? I'm not against anyone who is anti-illegal, I just REALLY don't agree with them. In fact, when I am around people who start in against the illegal immigrants, I just nip the convo in the bud and ask not to go there.

In the past couple of days, I've been called a fifth column and watch people high-five each other over pointing out that "we" all have spouses from a certain country. And most notably, someone just said (to paraphrase): ** those jacka$$es, in reference to "us" illegal-lovers. I'd be interested in seeing where I've called anyone a name who doesn't agree with me.

I certainly have thought about some choice names I'd like to call people, but I have refrained from doing so.

:star: Welcome to life, where you must hold your tongue sometimes.

As far as the jacka$$ comment, I dunno what you are talking about. There's plenty of r-word comments flying about the AI group.

You openly admit you are friends with illegals & will not report them. *shrugs*

Wrong again. I take exception to most hysterical posts pedroh & other anti-anti-illegals name-calling posts. And sorry you don't like the label, but it's true. Maybe you prefer 'pro-illegal'? I figured that one was not exactly true...cuz mostly the AAI* group is just that, against us (AI*), not necessarily pro-illegal.

It seems most like to argue that the AI group is racist (see title).

There's no where to go with this. You appear from this answer to be incapable of actually seeing what I am posting or seeing me as an individual. You seem to prefer this distorted view of what you think I ought to be posting based on these preconceptions and labels that you seem to be very attached to.

I am quite prepared to debate topics based on what people post, but I am certainly not interested in defending things that you think I think without the slightest evidence that I actually do think them.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I guess repatriating 50,000 Irish would be a bit of a challenge for Ireland, although less so now than 20 years ago. I am suprised there aren't more though , the urban myth is that there are more Irish living outside of Ireland than within.;)

It's actually not a myth, there are many millions more Irish outside Ireland. To be accurate, you'd have to define your version of the Irish Diaspora. Its population has stabilized but has never recovered from the massive emigration in the mid-1800s. (The current population is 6 million; it was 8 million before the famine.)

Ireland's economy is quite robust, not due in small part to Irish-descended entrepreneurs from the States and elsewhere investing there (Massachusetts-based EMC, for example). And Dublin is by no means a bargain destination. It's interesting what's happening there.

A lot of the new found economic strength of the Irish is as a result of the EU. It's a great country, I have many fond memories of times spent in Donegal. :)

My grandmother emigrated from Ireland at the turn of the century as a little girl. Both my father and mother decided to get dual citizenship several years ago. :)

I'm not sure if it's still the case, but I think the right of abode rules for Ireland used to be quite flexible, like if you could trace your ancestry back to an Ireland-born great grandparent and provide documentation, you could get an Irish passport. Speaking of myths, this may have been a myth among young Americans trying figure out a way to work legally in Europe (of which I was one. I was in the Netherlands and didn't want to leave!).

My (Irish descended) grandmother is into genealogy, so I'd asked her how far back we had to go to find an ancestor who was born in the old country. Sadly for me, it was something like seven generations. So, at least on that side, my Irish ancestors must have been among the first to bail when things were looking bad. So, no Irish passport for me!

By descent

A person is an Irish citizen by descent if at the time of his or her birth at least one of his or her parents was an Irish citizen. In cases where at least one parent was an Irish citizen born in Ireland or an Irish citizen resident abroad in the public service, citizenship is automatic and dates from birth. In all other cases citizenship is subject to registration in the Foreign Births Register. As of 1 January 1987 the Irish citizenship of those individuals requiring registration dates from registration and not from birth, as had been previously the case.

In practice, anyone with an Irish citizen grandparent born in Ireland, can easily claim Irish citizenship. His or her parent would have automatically been an Irish citizen and their own citizenship can be secured by registering themselves as in the Foreign Births Register. In contrast, those wishing to claim citizenship through an Irish citizen great-grandparent may be easily frustrated if their parents were not registered in the Foreign Births Register. Their parents can only transmit Irish citizenship to children born after they themselves were registered and not to any children born before registration.

Citizenship acquired through descent may be maintained indefinitely, with each generation ensuring its registration prior to the birth of the next.

charles asked me the same question.. answer, because I'm not a snitch... besides, I couldn't live thinking I destroyed a family, those guys I know have been living here for 10+ years, and their kids are born here, they have nothing back in Mexico.. I'm not a heartless 'law abiding' citizen as many others.. and if y'all want to report them, I can give you their info.. but I'm not a snitch.. they don't sell crack or anything else that bothers me, they pay taxes, and work like hell.. their kids are not mexican, they are Americans... so, I don't see the point of sending them back to Mexico
