I think he's right. IMO it's not so outrageous to imagine that society is organised according to the ideology of its most dominant and influential groups.

I think most people find it difficult to see race as something other than biological. So the idea of racism, or being a racist, seems ludicrous. It's a huge roadblock to talking about racism and I think it's part of what's dumbing down the discussion. (I think.) (I hope.)

Race IS biological. If you're talking classim, that's another story....but to say racism is something other than biological has got to be one of the most ludicrous things I have ever heard in my life.

race is biological? how do you figure?

race without color

We're not overrun. The U.S. is not facing overpopulation. The issue isn't even one of numbers, at least not yet, or stemming the tide.

so how is the water situation out there in the desert? if it's not a topic of numbers, do tell why so many areas have in place water restrictions. atlanta, anyone?

Oddly, it's less of an issue here than in other parts of the country, because water management is a big deal for obvious reasons. That said, it is an unnatural place to live, I'll be the first to admit. A city this size shouldn't exist in the desert. (The husband and I are planning a move to Portland, Oregon, within the year, I feel I should add.) :-)

Should we connect population growth to drought conditions? I don't mean that sarcastically; I don't know.

i think it would be foolish to not take water supplies into account with population.

How is Arizona (or any other state for that matter) suppose to take into account population other than limiting development? Nobody is interested in putting restriction on development. Phoenix metropolitan area is one big urban sprawl, much like LA. Poorly designed and completely at the mercy of development.

they will soon realize their folly in several more decades as water supplies become tighter.

I agree, but that means pointing out water shortages as an illegal immigration issue is nonsensical. Back in the mid 90's, when I lived in the Phx area, there were about 12,000 people moving into the area per month. Los Vegas has also shown explosive growth....but...BUT...it was the developers and business that were salivating over the idea of having more people. Overconsumption and conservation of natural resources that most Right Wingers poo-poo at. They don't want anything to inhibit financial growth potential, even the environment.

IMO its an umbrella term. Often overused, and perhaps in the wrong contexts - but we are all talking about bigotry. The argument remains more or less unchanged regardless of the label we choose to attach to it.

Did the injury occur whilst reading this thread?

Actually, that would make a better story than me dropping a big plate squarely on my toe. While I was trying to make hummus. After drinking a bottle of wine.

Did I just admit that?

If Mexico was a "White" country would American policies continually stifle Mexico’s economic possibilities?

Yes, if Mexico's economic and global position in the world was still the same, American policies would not change because they have nothing to offer that would influence the US to do anything different. So yes, if Mexico was a "White" third world country, Americans would still turn their nose at them. :ot: However, it doesn't help that Mexico will not take any part in controlling the illegal flood of folks entering the US illegally creating much of the animosity that Americans have towards illegal aliens that are Mexican. It's also unfortunate that when illegal aliens are mentioned many Americans think of Mexicans first, but the fact is there are many other nationalities that have illegal aliens in the states as well. There just may be more Mexican illegal aliens than any other nationality (at least that’s the perception).

An interesting sidebar...Between 1850 and 1920, the U.S. Census counted ethnic Mexicans in the white column.

Well it isn't - so long as "the truth" we're both talking about is that there simply are more of them than of any other single group. Where the "r" word comes into the equation is the additional resentment that arises out of that basic truth. When people start to characterise, start to justify things like profiling - or that legal latinos should somehow not object to being treated on the basis of 'type' - that's where I think the problems start. That's my take anyway.

What exactly IS the truth, devlilette? You quoted pedroh's last statement, which includes his perception that people are saying "NO more Mexicans." Is that what you find to be the truth.

I'm DYING to know.
