I am new to this country and perplexed by the reelings on VJ that get labelled as 'politics'.......... could someone tell me what American Politics is?

You're not trying to tell me hat the Reb/Dem's really represent this country?

It's really conservative vs., liberal, but recently the parties really don't stand for those polarizing ideals and you get fiscally conservative Democrats or socially moderate Republicans.

Most American's seem to embrace a common sense approach and go issue by issue, but still identify with Republican or Democrat.

The problem with American politics is the two party system. Everyone feels if you don't vote for a Democrat or Republican you are tossing your vote away and there is some truth in that.

Picking a politician here in this system is sort of like asking someone, "Would you rather be shot in the heart with a gun or stabbed in the heart with a knife?"

Both choices suck.

That pretty much sums it up. It's a choice between who you think will screw you the least.

This country was set up by some brilliant politicains - no thoughts to take the power back?

So you are saying it is the ultimate fight of the middle ground?......... sad.

Things seem to be getting worse in the last few decades. Both sides are becoming more entrenched. I don't see how a third party could ever stand a chance here but I do think it would do the country good to have another viable choice.

This all makes it sound pretty sad, that everyone is buying into a pair of parites that they'd rather be shot of.........

People need to stop voting bandwagon fools in. Politicians here seem to be more concerned about being elected or reelected rather than actually getting anything done. When the republicans are in office every fanatical democrats are trying to destroy them and vice versa. Special interest groups and lobbyist also have a huge influence with politics here.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Everyone here that can vote should take a serious look at Ron Paul. We all need a little less government in our lives, and Ron Paul seems to be the only one that will actually cut the pork.

Apparently American politics is akin to advertising. The more emotional appeal, the more votes you are likely to get. Don't expect any decent debates though, the American public can't listen to more than 60 seconds of argument at one time
