I was watching a re-run of the show "Made in America," with Cliff from Cheers and saw a segment on All-Clad Cookware.

I'm a bit of a home chef and enjoy cooking, trying new recipes, and entertaining at times and the segment caught my eye. The cookware was high quality, the company was American, and I found myself checking the net and trying to find a few pieces to buy.

What I found was All-Clad actually out sources several of their pieces to China. They don't stamp a Made in USA or China on their products, only on the outside of the box.

Not only that, but in 2004 All-Clad was bought out by a French company.

I mean, even if you want to "Buy American," good luck with that.

Fender and Gibson guitars - Better buy an old one or triple check the one you want to buy.

American Cars - Significant content from outside the US.

Levi's - Stopped exclusively buying them when they started to manufacture outside the US.

The list goes on and on, but I was pretty disappointed in the TV show and All Clad. Right now it seems the company is just letting people assume everything is US made, but buyer beware.

I sort of remember that blurb about Walmart.

What is sort of ironic is American companies lay off American workers, outsource, stagnate pay rates for the lower levels of society because they want to maximize profits.

They provide the intellectual property, factories, processes, services, and anything they can to overseas countries and greatly improve the manufacturing, infrastructure, and lives of the people there.

The cheaper goods are shipped back here and Americans, who are scrimping and saving go to places like Walmart to buy products that were outsourced and go further into debt and create a larger gap in the trade deficit.

As a country we're basically enriching corporations and executives, gutting our own country, and empowering the nations we have outsourced everything.

they make jobs available, doesn't mean they improve the quality of life.. is not that they pay great money in those overseas manufacturing plants..

Oh don't get me wrong. The peon worker and the middle class on both sides of the equation are the losers. The quality of life increases come from the roads, power plants, ports, factories, other infrastructure improvements, the currency exchange rate favoring other currencies, being able to take over 'intellectual,' jobs in their own country or other countries, as well as the improved pay in some of the higher level and professional jobs being outsourced.

Any way you cut it the foreign country benefits, while the US loses ground.

Things like this change with time. The United States is no longer a "parts and labor" society. We've changed into something more like an "information technology" society instead. While this is good in many ways, it also means you won't see the old "Made in America" stamp nearly as often anymore. It just isn't cost-effective when companies can outsource to developing nations and build their products cheaper, turn it all around and sell for a greater profit in highly developed and industrial countries.

Basically, the bottom line is that Americans want stuff, but they don't want to pay for it. So in order to keep costs relatively low, companies outsource. They can still make money this way (lots of it, actually), but they can afford to lower prices and keep the majority of the American public at least somewhat content. If we were to go back to constructing products ourselves, prices would skyrocket and consumers wouldn't be too happy.

no, they are made in Troy

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I remember when Walmart marketed themselves as the 'Made in America' store...until consumer groups called them on it. They are biggest exporter of products made in China. How ironic.

I remember my father telling me that every thing in walmart was made in the USA. That was before 1995. I corrected him.

I just bought some Club Glove luggage. Made in USA. Saved by buying on eBay. They were dropped shipped from the factory.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
