I never understood why people feel it necessary to "Americanize" their given names. Be proud of your heritage and the name your parents gave you!

I don't feel it is necessary to americanize my given name. I like it the way it is and I wish everybody would call me like it is pronounced in Brazil. But it is very similar, it's not a huge difference, so oh well.

those who americanize their names are NOOBS imo.. and should feel ashamed of not respecting their background.. i.e hispanicswho change their name from juan to johnny, roberto as bob.. asians who change their whatever name to bob, jimmy, charlie... or indians who change their uber awesome name to Greg, or some other american names

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

My name is Venkateshwaraparathasarathyvellupillai Ramanathanashivaprasad Aiyerpillai.

Americans have no trouble at all saying my name.

I can see why, it's as easy as "John"!

People who don't know me well call me Christine and I hate it. It has an 'A' at the end of it!! ChristinA! No matter how many times you correct certain ppl, they don't learn. And my cousin's name is Christiana. We are only 6 months apart and growing up ppl were always calling us each other's names.

Sujeet has to pronounce his name a bunch of times before ppl say it (sort of) right. I never heard it before meeting him either,it's hard for ppl to say right away. And our last name, forget about it!

Well, a name is just a name, after all. I think some people just get sick of hearing their names mispronounced - having a familiar name does make life easier.

Whenever I take a call for my husband, I'm appalled that people don't take the time to figure out how they're going to mispronounce his name *beforehand*. I mean, just come out and say it wrong and enough with the "Hello is...Waaaaa....Ooooaaaa.....Woooooodaaa...."

John is a tonguetwister!

I haven't changed my name legally, but there is nothing 'awesome' about having to constantly explain how my name is pronounced. It gets very tiring and I'd frankly much rather they call me what I ask them to call me by instead of asking me how my full name is pronounced.

I started calling Sujeet "Suj" when we first started talking and it kind of stuck. So now mostly everyone we know calls him just Suj, which he doesn't mind. The funny part is when some people write it down and write Sudg, Sudge or Surge after seeing so many things I have written to them that say simply Suj!!

The pronunciation of my name by Americans doesn't bother me but when I try to tell them my name my hubby has to repeat it so they understand...

"Dawn"

"ahhhh....I see...Daarrnnnnnn" or "Don"

In England it sounds more like "Dorn"

How is that pronounced?

Yooree?

Or Ooree?

Or Yoor-eye?

Or Oor-eye?

its Oor-ee, but not the american r (fricative), the latin soft r (dental r i guess, more like an english D).. in the south people thought I was saying Woody, and most people say it like the russian Yuri..
